(A beautiful thick heavy vinyl 1970 UK first pressing which still retains its full gloss and sheen showing only a couple of tiny surface marks and a few faint inaudible wispy hairlines. The vinyl has only been played sporadically and very carefully handled in the 40 years I have owned it. The record delivers excellent audio throughout with great powerful sound clarity and only very occasional very minor static. A lovely original UK CBS 1st pressing of this CLASSIC album)

(Both labels are clean and unmarked with only a couple of very faint spindle traces)

LP Sleeve: VG+

(On the front you can see some ringwear, a few tiny sticker removal tears near top left and light creases near the lower corners. There is some shelfwear rubbing on the top and bottom seams. The spine has some rubbing but is still legible. The rear has light ringwear and a few light scuffs. Overall the sleeve is very solid, with no writing and no rips. It is graded a conservative very good + condition)

1970 UK original 1st PRESSING issue of this BRILLIANT and RARE UK CBS label FOLK / PSYCH / PROG GEM

On offer here is an excellent condition original 1970 UK 1st pressing vinyl LP of the great GARY FARR album titled "STRANGE FRUIT", released on the UK (Made In England) 1st press CBS orange label.

Rare 1970 UK 10-track LP by the accomplished singer/songwriter Gary Farr also featuring Richard Thompson guesting on lead guitar plus Ian Whiteman, Roger Powell & Mick Evans from Mighty Baby providing additional backing. Overlooked at the time, this is now seen as a very important album & the original vinyl is seldom seen.

"Strange Fruit" is a great undiscovered work of the late 60s folk-psych/prog genre, cited by many serious collectors as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on stunning lead guitar throughout and leading lights of the British underground scene MIGHTY BABY!! This was the second of three uniformly excellent solo albums by Gary Farr and is the best of a strong bunch. A review I read described it as a "minor masterpiece" and I would completely agree. These ten songs are nicely varied (as usual for Farr), mixing Stones-like rockers with Farr's trademark folk rock leanings and more rock oriented singer/songwriter tracks that venture into the same general territory as that of Mick Softley or Roy Harper.

   "In The Mud", which kicks this album off, is stunning stuff. Slowly building to an incredibly memorable chorus--this is a song that will get stuck in your head and force you to give it a lot of playing time in your home. It's genuinely infectious and also uplifting. It's yet another forgotten gem in Farr's neglected catalogue.  "Revolution Of The Season" was released as a single off this album and it's too bad it didn't receive the attention it deserved. It's a beautifully crafted and instantly catchy track that has a buoyancy and effervescence that just lifts your spirits.  "About This Time Of Year" and "Proverbs Of Heaven And Hell" are up there with the very best singer/songwriter songs of the era and, again accompanied only by his 12 string, "Down Among The Dead Men" is a slightly ragged, (appropriately) harrowing song about the emotions conveyed by the loss of love.

   Elsewhere, the Stones-like vibe is strong on "Old Man Boulder" and "Old Man Moses"--particularly in the latter case where with little imagination one can visualise Mick Jagger peacock strutting around the stage, harmonica in hand. It's rollicking fun and blends perfectly with "Margie", which has a great bluesy tone and some very tasty dobro or National steel. Special mention must go to Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson, who provides some extremely inventive and complex solos. It is a clear indication why he is so revered in the music world. He elevates already superb songs up to another level.

   Mighty Baby members Ian Whiteman, Roger Powell and Mick Evans are also very strong here. Whiteman provides some technically dazzling piano (just check out the fleet fingered ivory tickling coursing through "Revolution Of The Season") and some smokin' 70's flute. Powell and Evans are a brick solid rhythm section, equally adept on the boogie tracks as the summer day, driving down an open highway vibe of "About This Time Of Year". The album ends with "Sweet Angelina", the song of an outcast character teetering on the edge of love and life.

   So, in summary, "Strange Fruit" is indeed a minor masterpiece of early 70's songcraft, encompassing many styles of the era and all held tightly together, and therefore unified, by the conviction and artistry of Gary Farr. "Strange Fruit" is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter and is certain to appeal to all who adore loner folk-psych music both melancholic and uplifting.

There are numerous moments on this superb album of genuine beauty! This magnificent album is a 'must have' and quite essential for 60's psych/folk-rock/prog afficionados.

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.
