Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: May 18-20, 1966

A strange album of breezy pop ephemera that’s just as bewildering as it is beguiling. In the first and last of their collaborations that pit both names at the top of the bill, Gary McFarland and Gabor Szabo make their first bid for an out and out fusion of jazz and pop rock.

The result is not exactly a success and any sign of victory in either genre is likely to put off fans of the other genre. Most listeners that would even bother to pick this up in the first place will be expecting to hear these two engage in jazz interactions, if not the light jazz present on Szabo and McFarland’s previous collaboration, GYPSY ’66, and there’s precious little of that outside of McFarland’s spectacular title track and parts of Szabo’s hypnotic “Spring Song”.

The focus here is on pop music, which finds the two leaders – for better or worse – singing. While their voices make for a peculiar yet not disagreeable blend, Szabo is clearly not the vocalist McFarland is. Together, they work best on the Beatles numbers (“The Word” and “Norwegian Wood”), chiefly due to McFarland’s amazing facility for suggesting a cross between a Beatle and a Beach Boy in his nearly monotonic delivery.

Szabo’s originals (“Yamaha Mama”, “You Will Pay”) aren’t too bad and seem to be the kind of thing he would continue exploring on his JAZZ RAGA album. Surprisingly, McFarland’s originals (“Hey, Here’s A Heart”, “Ups And Downs”, “She’s A Cruiser”) aren’t among his stronger work and, predictably, never caught on. There are also the seemingly unhip inclusions of “Nature Boy” and “Cool Water”, which probably wouldn’t have appealed to any pop rock fan who happened upon this set.

The album bombed at the time, receiving (few) poor reviews and garnering almost no sales to make it anything more than a cult classic, which indeed it has become. How? Even though it’s rather poorly recorded (one of McFarland’s earliest productions) and there are some genuinely jarring and incongruous moments on hand in this all-too brief set, repeated listens yield positively remarkable rewards – especially in the too-few instances of Gabor Szabo’s piquant and pithy playing.

These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(e)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(f)            In addition, mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 2 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1 and 5 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seams and spine

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2; significantly more ring wear noted on the inside gatefold.

-         The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the opening edge (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has multiple radio station ex-libris stamps on the inside gatefold

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels
