"Memories of El Monte" (Penguins) b/w "Never Let You Go" (Five Discs)

A couple of years prior to the inception of the Mothers of Invention, Zappa shared studio space with a friend in Cucamonga, CA, where he recorded local artists and some of his own music. "Memories of El Monte" was written as a tribute both to doo wop and to the El Monte American Legion Stadium where Zappa attended many dance shows (El Monte, CA was a popular venue for shows because, unlike L.A. and other nearby towns, there was no ordinance requiring the local Board of Education to be present at concerts and dances). Enlisting Cleve Duncan to sing the lead (the Penguins last single had been three years previously) and the Viceroys to sing back-up (Zappa was fond of saying that the back-up singers were found at a local car wash, but that doesn't look to be the case), the single was recorded and then shopped to Chief and Art Laboe's Original Sound labels. Laboe got the deal, but Chief pressed up a limited number anyway, either simultaneously with or even slightly prior to Original's release. This first Chief pressing lists Cleve Duncan as the songwriter and the Five Discs as the group; I'm told that Chief later changed the group name to the Penguins. In any case, there wasn't very many copies of either pressed. Deadwax reads CH-101, with other inscription scratched out.
Sound clips are unfiltered - warts and all. Please let me know if there's any problem with an order. Grades are visual for vinyl, if the audio grade doesn't compare favorably I won't list the record - in any case, listen to clip. Label defects, if any, will be noted and/or pictured.
