Frank Zappa Old Masters 1-3 and Beat the Boots

If you're a serious vinyl collector or Zappa fan, you know how coveted these are, so I won't go into too many specifics here.

Check out the pics. These box sets are in great shape. The Old Masters sets have the expected amount of shelf wear of a 20+ year-old collection, but there are no tears and or damage. The vinyls are in mint condition. Most look barely played, some look like they've never been played. All original liner notes and art.

The Boots box is in great condition, and the pop-up is flawless if only for a small tear in the upper-right — pictured — which looks unavoidable after opening it just a few times. A design flaw. The "As An Am" album in this set is labeled 483 out of 500, but I can't tell if that's a real edition number or just a wacky Zappa-ism; both are equally plausible.

A brief rundown of the sets

Old Masters Box One

The first box set consists of the first five albums by Zappa (Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, We're Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy and Cruising With Ruben & The Jets) and a bonus "Mystery Disc" consisting of previously unissued material that, at the time, was unavailable elsewhere. Only the first and second Old Masters box sets featured a Mystery Disc. In 1998, both Mystery Discs were combined together and released as a single CD by Rykodisc (with the omission of two tracks, "Big Leg Emma" and "Why Don'tcha Do Me Right", which had already been included as bonus tracks on the Absolutely FreeCD). A sampler containing material from the box set was also issued.

Old Masters Box Two

The second box set consisted of the albums Uncle Meat, Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Chunga's Revenge, Fillmore East, June 1971 and Just Another Band From L.A.. Like its predecessor, it featured a bonus "Mystery Disc" of previously unreleased material. The material on both bonus discs were not available elsewhere until they were issued on a single CD in 1998 by Rykodisc.

Old Masters Box Three

The third box set consisted of the albums Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe ('),Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, Bongo Fury and Zoot Allures. Unlike its predecessors, it did not feature a "Mystery Disc", and a sampler was not issued.

As an Am features recordings from three separate shows. Track 1 is from May 19, 1981 at Rockline, KLOS-FM, Los Angeles, California; tracks 2 and 3 are from May 21, 1982 at Sporthalle, Cologne, Germany and tracks 4-6 are from October 31, 1981 at The Palladium, New York City.
