Description

The inimitable Florence Foster Jenkins is once again in the news, thanks to the new movie starring Meryl Streep. The real-life Florence Foster Jenkins (1868 - 1944) a Manhattan society matron and avid amateur singer, reduced arias to a jagged rubble of flat notes and shrieks. 
In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he's facing his greatest challenge yet.

Jenkins made only 5 records, between 1941 and 1944. These were privately produced, by the Meltone Recording Studio ("Your portrait in sound".) The number of records pressed is apparently unknown but was certainly very limited since these were primarily made for Jenkins to sell to friends. They were not generally available in stores, aside perhaps from the Gramophone Store in NYC, who described one of the recordings as “a most unusual record which must be heard to be believed”. A very succinct description.

This 78rpm recording is 12" in diameter and is unusually thick and heavy. 
This is from my Father-In-Law's collection.  He has owned it for over 50 years.
