This band formed in late '68 as IRON PROPHET,
a heavy trio comprising Rick Sharp, Clive Shepherd
and Dick Hawkes.They changed their name to Five Day Rain
in early 1970, with the arrival of Graham Maitland
and the beginning of the recordings we are presenting here.
One of the rarest UK albums; just 15 copies of this album
were put out but soon after someone circulated 'white label' copies
of it so beware of these.The album was recorded at IBC Studios
in Portland Place, London, during 1970.
Some of the best albums and singles of the 60's and 70's
come out of there. Sadly, the premises are now offices.
Brian Carroll and the legendary engineer Damon Lyon-Shaw
(They were recording member of The Factory on UK MGM
what released Great Beat Psych 45s) produced and mixed
for their own 'HOMEGROWN MUSIC' company.
Brian started as a disc cutter there, and cut the likes of Jimi Hendrix,
Small Faces, and 'Live at Leeds' for the Who.
Damon engineered all the major LP's of the late 60's and early 70's
for everyone from The Who, The Small Faces, Status Quo,
Cream and the Rolling Stones. Albums such as Tommy, and Farewell Cream.
with a taint of psychedelia but it was eventually
put out as a private pressing
in a plain white cover because no label was interested in it.
The sixties ended with a man on the moon and the seventies saw
a music business that was leaning more to the sales potential of albums
than the not so profitable single. Bands were spending
more time creating their music but they all needed good writers.
Brian Carroll and Damon Lyon-Shaw found one in Graham Maitland,
a talented musician from Scotland who wanted to record his songs
with his own band. This was a group of musicians he knew locally
and his cottage in the country was a meeting place as they put together
enough material for an album. HOMEGROWN produced the band
and within a few months they had a finished master that would be sent to
leading record companies. 25 test pressing were made
but only 2 or 3 were sent out before POLYDOR records showed interest.
(10 copies of this album were thrown away in error by Brian Carroll
in the early 1990's which has made this a rare album.).
The man from POLYDOR who wanted the album was running around
for weeks as the band settled down for a long wait
while negotiation were taking place. No one really knows
what happened but the out come was that after 6 months of
getting nowhere the band decided to spilt when
Graham Maitland was offered a chance to become a member of a band
called GLENCOE. With the deal dead Brian and Damon decided to
get into producing their own songs (see ONE WAY TICKET albums
from EVANGEL RECORDS) FIVE DAY RAIN were basically a studio band
put together by GRAHAM, BRIAN and DAMON as proved by the forgotten
surnames of KIM the drummer and CLIVE the bass player.
RICK SHARPE was guitarist on most of the tracks except for
"SEA SONG" "FALL OUT"and "ROUGH CUT MARMALADE "
These had the guitar of future producer JOHN HOLBROOK who was a friend
of Brian and Damon and soon to be off to America
to work for Bearsville studio.
Notable cuts are the 11-minute instrumental Rough Cut Marmalade,
which is the album's most psychedelic offering; the catchy Sea Song
and keyboard driven Leave It At That.
