Description
This is a great opportunity to grab a rather obscure early issue of this iconic debut album from Free (circa Sept '69)
Island ILPS 9089 stereo LP 1969 ...
Between the issue of the first press of "Tons Of Sobs" (on the 'Bullseye/Pink' label) and Island changing their label to a 'White i" on pink (circa Dec '69) the Company adopted a 'transitional' black 'Bullseye' or 'Block' logo on a pink label for some 4 months. This issue of "Tons Of Sobs" (circa Sept '69) was to help boost sales following the band's support tour with "Blind Faith" in the summer of '69.
A flood of 2nd (and subsequent) pressings with other Island label variants then followed, like the white 'i' on pink and palm tree - many of which are often unduly 'hyped'.
The last appearance of an issue like this on ebay was in Nov 2011 and not in such good condition! This version rarely surfaces and is from my own collection, purchased on day of issue, and is a great chance for avid collectors of the band's work to acquire what is perhaps as rare an original and sought-after issue from 1969 as the very first press...
The Disc (EX+):
The heavyweight vinyl is very near mint, with a few feint spindle marks and a few almost imperceptible surface marks on Side 1. Therefore, I cautiously give it only an EX+
Run-outs are: ILPS+9089+A2 and ILPS+9089+B2.
Textured pink labels with the black 'bullseye/block i' logo and black text. (See label image).
The Sleeve (VG):
The un-laminated gatefold cover is as the very first issue print stock by Ernest J. Day & Co., Ltd - with the bullseye Island logos and "155-157 Oxford Street London W1 England" address in green out of the b/ground. The 'sepia' inner spread also has the Simon Kirke print error of "Simon Kirk". The inner spread of the sleeve is very clean. The outer edges/corners & spine show typical signs of wear for a 42 year-old cover, but nothing drastic and thus a VG. The white punch-hole (non-poly) liner is the original, with some yellowing around edges and a few corner creases.
