If you want to hear some really hot, exiting music played by some of the greatest players of that most productive period of the sixties, I'm sure you will like this. Sit down and relax, close your eyes and imagine you are in the audience of a jazz-club. This is no music for radio-playing, the sound quality isn't the very best, but everybody is really stretching out and taking chances. so this is music played for the fellow musicians and of course for a hip audience. Besides that, this is a rare occasion to hear two of the greatest trumpeters playing together. By the way, both Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan did many albums for the BlueNote-Label, and each of them had played with Art Blakey for a long period. The first tune "Pensative" starts with Lee Morgan using the harmon mute (one of the rare occasions where he uses it), while James Spaulding is playing flute, so it's a soft start with that kind of relaxed samba-feeling, but then thing turn out to be a "friendly trumpet-battle" between Hubbard and Morgan. "Walkin" is Morgan's feature and shows him really at the peak of his power. James Spaulding on alto is also exciting. Though he never got very much recognition, he really could play everything from bop to free, making really important contributions to many recording-sessions of the sixties. It is very interesting to compare the next tune "Breaking Point" with the studio version of the album with the same title, which sounds more like avantgarde with it's "free-sections", while the live-version here is more conventional with it's steady calypso-feeling. "Jodo" is my favourite tune on that album. It is Hubbard's feature and he really plays some fantastic trumpet , much faster than on the studio version of the same tune, done a few weeks earlier for Hubbard's album "Blue Spirits". Pianist Harold Mabern also plays beautiful piano solos on each tune, and just dig Pete La Roca and "Big Black"....they really have a lot of "percussion discussion" running on that exiting live gig.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastilite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(f)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the opening side (nothing significant)  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         The cover has a small round razor-like line (cut) on the cover, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
