I play each used record & grade (Jacket/Vinyl) according to Goldmine Standards:
(my additions are in italics)
SS: Still Sealed—in factory-fresh condition.
M: Mint—perfect, factory-fresh but opened.
M- (or NM): Mint Minus or Near Mint—a near perfect record. Shiny, with no visible defects.
Writing, stickers, spindle marks, or other markings cannot appear on the label.
M- jackets have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.
VG+ (or EX): Very Good Plus or Excellent—only superficial signs of use that don’t affect play.
May show slight signs of wear, incl. light scuffs/very light scratches that don’t affect listening.
(Could have some light surface noise in quiet passages).
VG+ jackets may have very light ring wear or discoloration, barely noticeable.
May have very minor seam wear or a split (less than 2”); could have cut-out/similar markings.
VG: Very Good—used reasonable copy; maybe light scratches deep enuf to feel w/ fingernail
Has surface noise which doesn’t overpower the music. Some scratches may be audible.
Label can have minor writing, tape or sticker.
VG jackets have obvious ring wear, but not overwhelming; more creases visible.
Seam splitting more obvious; it may appear on all 3 sides, but won’t be obvious upon looking.
Someone might have written on it or stamped a price tag on it.
VG-: Very Good Minus—significant wear, marks and usually quite noticeable surface noise.
G+: Good Plus—In the record world, “Good” is not good!
From here on down (Fair, Poor), we’re talking about beat-up records.
