If you are familiar with the Pretty Things' or (not so much)  The Elastic Bands work for the DeWolfe Music Library under the guise of the Electric Banana and the COOL, but what other beat/psych sounds were stockpiled on that company's shelves in the 1960s? Tenth Planet - who else? - answered that question with this release Freakout at the Facsimile Factory, compiling the most interesting material from six DeWolfe albums circa 1966-69 as well as detailing the history and background of the company and explaining the circumstances under which these tracks were recorded. The participants in these sessions (which were used to maintain an inexpensive supply of contemporary music for use in movies, television shows, etc) were sometimes anonymous studio musicians; on other occasions (as with the Pretty Things and The Elastic Band ) they were bona-fide groups, checking in pseudonymously to make a little money on the side. The Cool, represented here by three tracks, are unmasked as none other than The Elastic Band ("8 1/2 Hours To Paradise", Expansions On Life) featuring a pre-Sweet Andy Scott on guitar. Their "Highway Song" is a Moddish hard rocker, marred somewhat by a too-prominent flute, but "We Met In December" and "Emily Waits" are powerful, if occasionally overwrought ballads, with cool Hammond work and a nice heavy rhythm section. Even better are the Lemon Dips with their late Artwoods/early Deep Purple sound and Creamy harmonies. "I Am The Man" is a heavy Hammond and wah-wah dance mover, while "Who's Gonna Buy" is a sinister blues number with some wild bass and organ lines, and though "Travelling Man" is a nothing song it's pumped into life by its fast driving rhythm. The identity of two members of the London Studio Group can easily be discerned from the title of one of the two 1966 tracks included here: "Pageing Sullivan," an atmospheric instrumental featuring some moody fuzz guitar lines alongside Vox organ and some jazzy vibes. The similarly styled "March of the Defiant Ones", with Page (probably) on harp, conjures up images of English rebel youth (Mods and/or Rockers) strutting the seafront in some black and white drama of the period.

Other hip cinematic instro stylings are provided by none other than Reg Tilsley (he of Emotions orchestration controversy) whose Tilsley Orchestral sound uncharacteristically swinging on "Shot In the Arm," replete with bendy fuzz guitar, heavy bass crunch and bluesy Hammond B3 action.

Further instrumental mood pieces in the avant-garde, electronic and Indian styles are provided by Pierre Sciortino, Electronic Sounds and Kansara respectively. These are sequenced strategically among the `rockier' tracks to create a music library compilation that is both stimulatingly diverse and highly listenable.
