Label/Format: Reprise – original format with no Warner symbols, these have matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule, barely any at all.

Weight of this Record: 100 grams. Rarely pressed heavy, the year of issue typical, but this one very well pressed, it plays little short of perfectly.

Rarity: Scarcer as a first pressing with the A1/B1 matrixes and the original matt finished cover and no Warner logos on the labels. Later pressings had a shinier cover and some were then pressed abroad with the Warner Logo on the labels.

Brief Info: The first full live Zappa album and a brilliant set issued to mimick a bootleg in protest over the number being made of Frank’s music at this time. Zappa was not happy with his music often being made available before official release and this cover, by Carl Schenkel (he made him do it), is simplistic and deliberately made to look plain with pencil writing (as referred to on Just Another Band From LA, the follow-up live album (also on offer amongst a host of other Zappa records). This was also the first full Mothers album to feature Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan on vocals – ex-Turtles – they did appear on some tracks on Zappa’s second solo album Chunga’s Revenge. The classic Turtles single ‘Happy Together’ is covered here and given the full Mother’s treatment. A legendary live set, recorded at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, saw Zappa’s Mothers take a new direction with a largely new line-up. More satire which was very bawdy, blended with some superb rock. Most of the material was new and previously unissued. Lyrically, this does not hold back with tales of being on the road. Exploits with mud sharks with plenty of sexual references and innuendo. Most of the satire revolves around groupies of which there were plenty at this time. But between the explicit humour are some stunning instrumentals and soloing notably by Zappa and Don Preston on mini-Moog (‘Lonesome Electric Turkey’), part of the encore. Although the cover represented a bootleg, the album’s production does not and is well recorded and produced by Frank and far better than the harsh-sounding digital version. The early and original CD versions omit ‘Willie the Pimp part two’ – I still cannot understand why. This blistering fuzz guitar solo opens side two of the record but not on the original discs. This is a superb copy, the record looks hardly played and sounds fantastic. And the cover has little to fault either, one that is more often seen very shabby and ring worn. In the days when this was issued, covers did not include warnings on content, I guess if this was issued now it possibly would. Quite frankly, this has several tracks of smut-snigger sexual humour – but no-one did it better than Zappa – this is a brilliant set from the ultimate entertainer – when buying his albums when first issued, nobody knew what to expect and that is what makes his catalogue so fascinating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated single format this has the original matt finish with no coatings. Pprinted and made in England by Shorewood, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover – Front & Back: A quite basic cover made to resemble a bootleg, all the text looking like pencil and made to look like a bootleg from the time. Unprotected and predominately white means this often wears very badly. Any grubbiness on this is light, the same for any rim impression, marks or rubbing. Creasing has largely been avoided, any present little, fine and faint. Both sides are quite impressive as-seen.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both straight with hardly anything to fault to the top one. The lower storage edge has a little mild, patchy toning seen viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening light, this guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with hardly any trace of compression. All text is perfect and unworn, also very well centred with minimal traces of darkening to the white surface.

Corners: All retain excellent shape with minimal rub traces and no knocks.

Cover Summary: Deliberately basic, this cover had a message for those who chose to bootleg his music, any minor mild marks or grubbiness (of which there is little) simply blends in to add to the effect. Overall an impressive example and it should please many collectors. The plain white unlined inner is excellent with little to fault with two perfect window circles and no edge splits. The paper only gently darkened with age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with great shine and fairly solidly pressed. Many records within this year were thinly pressed to save oil due to the shortage. But better thin than heavier using recycled vinyl. Such records often had vast amount of surface noise and crackle which this certainly does not. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces minimal, ultra fine and faint, even as seen under bright light. This should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: “What’s the secret word for tonight”, the famous opening to the ‘Mud Shark’, still one of the classic lines on any Zappa album and fondly remembered by his vast number of fans. This first full live album plays superbly with little of any note to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound hardly registered, this is a quality clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Way better than the CD version that I feel has been tweaked too much and sounds a little bright compared to the warmer sound of the vinyl. With a fair degree of dialogue and quiet passages, a clean pressing is crucial – this copy delivers. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unique Zappa gem. Groupies and life on the road was the subject matter for this quite bawdy album. Clearly not one for the more sensitive listener, but for those with an open mind, this is unmissable. This copy will prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. ‘Don’t forget to register to vote’ – FZ.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
