Label Conditions: Both fresh, clean and attractive with that deeper tan finish than later ones. Only a very small few spindle marks, most of which are light, fine and faint with just a couple of side two thicker, hence more visible as seen on my scans.

Cat Number: K 44209.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good, better than average weight, even slightly later ones become much thinner.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderately scarce as a first issue with the heavier vinyl and darker labels, originals of course having no Warner logo at the 3 o’clock position. Also first issue covers had the large manufacturer’s sticker as seen in close-up, these are the hardest to find, this was soon dropped when more knew what this album actually was.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Certainly one of the most treasured albums Zappa produced in the early 1970s. This carries on the ideas on Waka/Jawaka and extends them much further with a big band of session musicians and a few of the remaining Mothers of Invention. This is a predominately instrumental set and includes some stunning solos and virtuosity. The Grand Wazoo must have surprised those who thought Zappa had gone down the road of bawdiness and wanted more of the same – this proved yet again the unpredictable nature of his albums, and that just one reason why his music and career was so fascinating. It was recorded when he was recovering from the horrendous fall from the stage at the London’s Rainbow Theatre after being pushed. This is a superb set, one of my personal favourites from his amazing catalogue. Big band jazz-rock, often dubbed as ‘Art Rock’, few albums I have heard sound quite like it. Highly rhythmical, with Aynsley Dunbar on drums, George Duke on keyboards and featuring a great Moog solo by Don Preston. An album including 22 musicians including Frank – all seen on my close-up picture from the centrefold – this is brilliantly produced by the man himself and this very early original plays very well indeed with little unwanted. Something of a landmark album that provides a stepping-stone to his later complex instrumental works. The cover is astonishing, featuring stunning artwork from Cal Schenkel, this would have helped sell a few albums for curious buyers – but like most at this time –it failed to chart. One collectors will want in strong condition, this cover has little wear, with most of any on the bottom storage edges, and not alot here either. The record is impressive with lovely clean playing surfaces and sound to match. For those who found a vocal Zappa a little too extreme at this time, this classic mainly instrumental set is well worth checking out – I guarantee few will be disappointed – this is kind’a like jazz, but not as we know it – Parompa pom pom.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed in England by Howards. Later ones had a semi-glossy sheen, the first issues were always matt and the very first issues included a manufacturer’s sticker to help identify who the record was by. These are most prized by Frank-Fans, and this one nicely placed to the centre above the title.

Cover Front: Always loved the cover of this album, so much detail and work went into it and this example does it strong justice. Any minor blemishes on the very corner tips that have rubbed a little and a mere rub trace near the central right edge, little else. Clean, fresh and very attractive with hardly a crease to be seen. The sticker itself has grubbied slightly, but being white, few will not a little. This one has never been picked or removed and these are not seen often.

Cover Back: Similar to the front, arguably even better, a faint rim impression trace near the bottom edge is almost nit-picking for the sake of it. The lack of grubbiness, creasing and ring wear makes for an exceptional example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Few colours are more revealing of grubbiness than yellow – so glad to state any traces inside here are tiny and light. Under light, a trace of natural crinkle and a minor fine mark near the top of the players, this barely registers with normal viewing. All the musicians are pictured with instrument details and the text describes the ‘Legend of Cleetus Awreetus’.

Top Edges: Both very straight with any rubbing light and patchy, the right corner tips have rubbed a little more.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light patchy rubbing, more near the ends, both still straight, also all edges are flush and near parallel which always mean neater and attractive.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are superb: the front is tucked and folded with a real edge, not cut, this is little short of as made. The back entrance is practically the same: very sharp, clean and crisp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burring minimal and faint.

Spine and Text: A complex graphic spine that has very little wear at all. Very solid and straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel – this makes the difference between average and exceptional. This is in super condition with any rub traces or chips tiny, very few and faint. All text and artwork barely worn and without grubbiness, The bottom corner tip has rubbed and being ultra critical, maybe a hint of fading, but with some I have seen being rubbed and eroded to bare card, this is highly impressive as I hope my pictures show.

Corners: Moderate, but only quite small corner tip rubbing, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: One of my favourite album covers and including that elusive original manufacture’s sticker which are always more challenging to find. The amazing artwork is as complex as the music enclosed. This lovely original should please many collectors. Remember, ones with a semi-shiny or varnished surfaces are NOT originals.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: in terms of wear, very little at all and aged little. A basic plain white unlined inner so typical of Reprise for this time. Both window circles undamaged, crisp and sharp and minimal creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with both playing surfaces very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surfaces traces being few, ultra fine and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus marks at all. Finding a first issue copy a great deal better will prove difficult – one most Zappa fans will enjoy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Zappa masterwork mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full and wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound traces very light, faint, a mere gentle trace at the very beginning of ‘Eat That Question’ for a briefest few second, this being critical and played on a hugely revealing turntable. Detail from the big band and the sheer power and realism on any quality system will impress even the most demanding listener and this record gives a commanding performance. This is analogue and vinyl near it’s very best. Zappa proves again he is the master musician, a man capable of producing such varied and wide ranging styles. Who wants predictable formulated music? – every album this man made was different and unpredictable – that is why is was impossible to get bored with him. This record without any doubt, has barely been played only very lightly and offers near mastertape audio quality. Just one owner from new and virtually nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Zappa classic. I can even recommend to any non-fans to give this one a try – any music lover can hardly fail to like it. This genuine first pressed copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. For those yet to discover the wonderful world of Frank Zappa – give this one a go – but be warned – his music is highly addictive and his catalogue is vast – an album to give your system and mind a good workout.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
