Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The second (more challenging) record appears hardly even played with barely a trace.

Rarity: Scarce, far too ‘out-there’ for most listeners of the time (and even since). A slow-steady seller at best in the UK and considered a flop in America.

Original Year of Release: 1966. The original UK version was an edited single album with three songs missing and one heavily cut. The cover also a single format with only the front being the same as the American original. This a UK 1971 first pressing of the complete double album with no edits and the full gatefold cover now included.

Brief Info: The 1966 psychedelic masterpiece, and rock’s first double album (after Dylan’s folk set Blonde on Blonde) that introduced the world to Frank Zappa and his Mothers of Invention. Made with a considerable budget and produced by Tom Wilson, but it had scant chance of commercial success and failed badly in America where it was quickly deleted. With its controversial subject matter and bizarre psychedelic music, this was never going to be music for masses, and those who bought this on issue must have been shocked, even terrified in what they heard. It almost single-handedly invented the American underground scene and it gained a small cult following mostly in Europe. Uncompromising and full-on, the album is superbly recorded and as bizarre and original as music ever got. The American original was a double set – and here only replicated in 1971 when repressed in full – the UK first issue was a single set and heavily edited to fit it on one disc. Clearly the UK market did not think the money for a double set was worth it as it was never going to repay the outlay. So this copy, although not a first issue, is a first issue of the actual complete album and is considerably superior to the rare first UK single album pressing with better sound on the wider grooves with no edits. This a lovely example with great sound, the cover, as usual has some edge rubbing (mostly on the top), but is still a nice one. For fans of the early Mothers music, this album is indispensible and a classic from the ‘King of Weird’.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the two polylined inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Still an attractive looking front with deep colour and only trace of rubbing near the very edges and corner tips. Any fine creases confined to the spine edge and any marks few and light with no sticker issues. This challenging front will always prove hard to find in top condition and this a fine looking example.

Cover Back: Very similar with a little more edge rubbing only. The lack of ugly ring wear is always a major plus on this one.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Slight darkening near the edges, but little else.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and flush with light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: As above with less rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Some thickening, mostly to the front inside, then mostly light on the others. Record enters on these edges.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine given the format. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is strong and unworn without the usual fading many acquire over time.

Corners: Moderate rubbing with the odd mild crease, quite fine shape retained without any major knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better with less wear than most seen these days. This solidly attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: one better with less discolouration or ageing. They were both manufactured in January 1971 with the same date-codes of 0171. These are polylined with neat undamaged window circles, minimal creasing and all edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): A very fine visual visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light, hardly anything on the more challenging second disc. A couple of faint, small/tiny marks on side two have a couple of three gentle clicks only and little else unwanted at all. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. An album rarely purchased by hi-fi purists at the time, and few much cleaner copies will be found easily. Visually lovely records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking underground psych classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early ‘first’ second (complete UK) pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain both records have been played only lightly and have been mostly very carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this mind-blowing album. These records especially will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
