Brief Info: The first volume of a live session with the LSO – volume two followed a few months later. Vinyl is the only way to hear the album as it was issued, CD versions have tweaked and altered the sound in places. Zappa always had a fondness of orchestral music, and even experimented with it on the his first album ‘Lumpy Gravy’ and film score to ‘200 Motels’, he returned to it on occasional further into his career. Now for the first time on album, he made this full orchestral set. Hardly commercial and challenging, but compelling and original. This a superb record that plays impressively.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: with only the odd blemish or two. A single matt format with the larger type on the front embossed. Printed and made in the United States, includes a plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Apart from a mild crease on the bottom left corner tip area, there is little else to fault on this very clean cover. Virtually as clean and fresh as when made.

Cover Back: A mild rub near the top edge against the inside flipback construction, then little else to fault again, any corner tip creasing tiny and faint on this side.

Top Edge: Straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Very similar to above, any blemishes tiny and few.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening minuscule. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. The text is unworn, any hint of rubbing on the surface tiny and very light.

Corners: Any tip rubs very small and light, a smallish creasing on the left bottom tip area mentioned already, the only dink there is. As these covers were imported to where they were sold outside the United States, this has fared well.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone 1980’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This clean fresh item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a very basic plain white inner with rounded corners. It has some near the top and a small tear on one opening, that apart, little else to fault with all folds intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this has hardly been played, of that I have no doubt. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. Any surface marks are light and generally quite faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light little even registers. American records seem to mark more freely than European ones, my own copy is very similar to this and both plays superbly. Most of any faint scuffing possibly in the actual pressing but with no affect on sound whatsoever. Visually a very fine looking record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This full orchestral album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and on such material I deem silence near impossible, especially as this is long set for vinyl with a duration of over 52 minutes. A very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mainly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended (if you like classical style Zappa without a guitar solo to be heard).

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
