·       FRANK ZAPPA - LUMPY GRAVY - ORIGINAL 1968 VERVE MONO LP V-8741

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·    YELLOW LABEL PROMO

MONSTRUOUSLY RARE PROMOTIONAL-ONLY MONO COPY; MONO VERSION OF THIS ALBUM WAS NEVER COMMERCIALLY RELEASED IN ANY WAY OR FORM

·       PLEASE NOTE: MONO PRESSINGS OF THIS ALBUM ON BLACK VERVE STOCK LABEL DO NOT EXIST AND WERE NEVER PRODUCED, IRRESPECTIVE OF WHAT SOME WEB SITES AND PRICE GUIDES CLAIM - THE ONLY U.S. MONO PRESSING CAN BE FOUND ON YELLOW LABEL PROMOTIONAL LABEL

·       ALSO NOTE: PROMO-ONLY MONO COVERS WERE CUSTOM COVERS (COVERS MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR PROMO-ONLY MONO PRESSING) AND CANNOT BE REPLACED WITH STEREO COVERS. YOU MUST HAVE A MONO-SPECIFIC COVER WHICH GOES WITH A PROMO-ONLY MONO RECORD TO HAVE A COMPLETE, HISTORICALLY ACCURATE, MATCHING SET. HERE’S HOW THE TWO COVERS DIFFER: PROMO-ONLY MONO COPIES DID NOT HAVE A STEREO BANNER OR STEREO CATALOG NUMBER (V6-8741) ON THE FRONT PANEL (IN FACT, MONO COPIES DID NOT HAVE EITHER ‘STEREO’ OR ‘MONO’ DESIGNATION ON THE FRONT COVER), HOWEVER THEY DID HAVE A DISTINCT MONO CATALOG NUMBER (V-8741) IN THE LOWER RIGHT-HAND CORNER AND ON THE SPINE; WHEREAS STEREO PRESSINGS HAD A VISIBLE AND PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED “STEREO” BANNER IN THE UPPER RIGHT-HAND CORNER, ACCOMPANIED BY THE STEREO CATALOG NUMBER. IN ADDITION, IN ORDER TO DISPLAY MONO CATALOG NUMBER (WHICH APPEARS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE COVER), THE PAPER SLICK ON THE COVER HAD TO BE PUSHED UPWARD, THUS REVEALING MORE OF ZAPPA’S (DIRTY, OF COURSE) SNEAKERS , AND LESS OF HIS AFRO, THAN ON THE STEREO VERSION

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST (AND ONLY) U.S. MONO PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL GATEFOLD COVER, MADE OF THICK CARDBOARD (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       MONO version of this album has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other digital format.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you'll get. GUARANTEED!)

This is Zappa FIRST solo album, and - believe it or not - it may actually be the hardest one to find - in many ways it is tougher to find than the mega-rare mono copies of his first three albums with the Mothers. Originally conceived as a ballet/classical piece, the album wound up in record shops' classical bins, where nobody who was into Mozart and Bach could relate to the name of Frank Zappa. The album flopped big time and disappeared without a trace, never to be reissued again until Zappa started systematically reissuing his (remixed) works on his Barkin' Pumpkin records label in the 1980's. Rare in any form, but particularly hard to find as original gatefold VERVE lp, such as the specimen we proudly present here.

VERVE’S YELLOW LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record. Of course, in this particular case, this is somewhat of a moot point, since the mono copies of this album were never commercially released.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            In addition, promo-only MONO pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 250:1 (STEREO PROMOS ALSO EXIST).

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (front side) and 5 (back side).

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (nothing significant)

-         Light yellowing noted on the INSIDE gatefold

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
