Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny and faint, hardly any in fact. Also of note, this copy plays superbly with barely anything unwanted, a crucial factor, especially so on side one with considerable dialogue.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very sood solid weight as first issues invariably were.

Rarity: Scarcer with the original style labels, made prior to the Warner logo being added. Earlier copies also have a very matt cover, later examples had a slightly shiny sheen and later still ones were varnished and very glossy. Only the very matt covers are originals.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This is THE album that changed my music life: I bought a copy of this as a 14-year-old in Clacton, Essex just after it came out - an older friend recommended me to Zappa, so I simply bought the album with the most interesting cover at the time. Well the content of this was so outrageous and different I was immediately hooked and started collecting all the previous albums working backwards. This is Zappa and The Mothers (as they were known at the time), the Flo & Eddie era at the height of his ‘satire period’. A live album recorded in 1971 at Pauley Pavilion in LA, it’s bawdy and hilarious, and above all else, original. Side one, ‘Billy the Mountain’ that occupies all side one and clocking in at 24.42 has to be one of the most bizarre live tracks ever put to record. Loosely, it tells a story of a live, mobile mountain who talks, with a Ethyl, a tree growing off his shoulder (Billy’s wife). Billy gets called up for the army - he evades the draft and starts rampaging all over America causing untold destruction. America has to act, so a fantastic new super-hero is called in to reason with him. This is Studebacher Hoch, a man who uses trained flies to transport him around with the aid of a telephone booth (this just has to be heard to be believed). Billy is confronted by the fantastic new super-hero, however he looses his footing and ruptures himself – the moral of the story - don’t **** around with a mountain (as sung as a repetitive catchy chorus as the side ends). Side two features four Zappa live classics, two are brand new. ‘Eddie are you Kidding’ and what has to be one of Zappa’s most controversial songs ever – and he wrote quite a few. ‘Magdalena’, a true story of a Canadian girl who had left home because she had been abused by her father. Howard Kaylan’s talk-over - voicing the desperation and confusion of her ‘straight’ father - is equally shocking four decades later. The father’s sad fantasies replay the satire of Nabokov’s Lolita. This is an amazing album, Zappa’s second live set following the groupie fun of Fillmore East. Not to everyone’s taste and I feel it’s still an underrated set and period in Zappa’s vast catalogue. The main vocal parts are provided by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, ex-Turtles and famed backing singers, it proved to be the last featuring them on a new Zappa album. Also featuring legendary blues drummer Aynsley Dunbar. It was issued at the time when Frank was recovering from the assault at the Rainbow theatre when he was pushed off the stage. He sustained a skull fracture, twisted neck and broken wrist and leg, even a paralysed arm and was wheelchair-bound for a year. Not a big seller, even for a time when his music had been discovered more. This copy on offer is a beauty, a very strong little worn cover and a record that looks hardly played and offering nigh-on pristine sound. I have this one to thank for getting me into this man’s wonderful music all those years ago – something that remains – even stronger to this present day.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and actaully looks even better. An unlaminated gatefold format with the original matt and smooth finish – this crucial for a proper first issue. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Superbly fresh, colourful and vibrant and with barely any traces of wear. Just a small bottom right corner tip crease, little else and one that has defied it’s considerable age and format.

Cover Back: Gentle rim impression mostly nearly the top edge, but this has barely rubbed, so hardly ringwear in the true sense of the term. The same corner tip crease is even lighter and shows little. Overall, this is a very impressive back that seldom wears this well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A couple of gentle hints of toning, but look hard. The corner tip crease again light and small. This centrefold again is impressive, the man slumped over the desk is the covers graphic artist Carl Schenkel.

Top Edges: Both edges are very straight, nigh-on flush and totally unworn.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same with just a tiny rub on the right tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge, the front being closed. Any burring or thickening minuscule even critically viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: Pristine: a superb spine that looks little short of new. Solid, very straight, uncompressed and folded square, all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text and graphic is perfect and unworn with no ageing, darkening or scuffs, and that includes the fold hinges. This fragile area is unlikely to be found better.

Corners: The corners, bar the aforementioned bottom right, that have the small dink crease, are largely as made.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone matt cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Be aware, those with more shiny surfaces are definitely later ones, the earlier ones must be matt. This very attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner is included in very fine condition. Two very crisp and undamaged window circles, minor creasing to one corner are and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Still quite white with any toning or tone spots tiny and light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–) / EXCELLENT(+): side two has a totally superficial light surface marks that NO sound whatsoever. In fact this copy plays superbly and beautifully pressed which is even more crucial for this album. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. Any ultra fine and faint traces only seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light, but hardly anythingn else worthy of mention, this record looks hardly played. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Zappa live set plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Devoid of surface sounds and an exceptional clean pressing. This is a record that needs to be especially as it has areas of quietness with dialogue – especially side one – this copy is easily up to the required standard. Few copies will match let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unique Zappa gem. Clearly not one for the more sensitive listener, but for those with an open mind, this is unmissable and Zappa’s wit pushed to the limit. This record will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
