do you have this record?
do you know how hard it was to pick musical categories for it? i got up to 29 different suitable descriptors, but definitely should have added "outsider music."
have you ever noticed how much of frank zappa is on here? for much of it, he took larry "wildman" fischer's unaccompanied songs and scored it into a kind of free cantata, lumpy gravy style, with ruth underwood-sounding percussion featured heavily. on "the taster (fancy version), zappa turned the song into a hard rock number, on which zappa himself plays all the instruments in a multitracked overdubbing extravaganza maybe aimed, quixotically, at the singles market in some alternate reality.
there's not really enough of 1968 zappa available, even today, because there could never be enough really. but here you have a immersive zappa record you may have overlooked, where his love for and admiration of wildman fischer (who's a kind of LA Moondog) leads him to create this incredibly uncommercial homage and sprawling survey of all aspects of wildman's personality...even including dark moments where fischer is questioning whether zappa is a healthy influence in his life.
listening to this again on vinyl, i really admired and loved the soundfield that frank created here, and the care and attention he gave to his fragile friend and composing peer. feeling grateful that this beautiful record was actually released, despite how commercially impossible it always was.
this is an early pressing of this 1969 release, characterized by the bright blue Bizarre labels. Bizarre, which started as a verve records offshoot owing to some smart contract renegotiation on zappa's part, was then transferred to reprise records, where it did not last very long.
fyi as far as i know there was a CD version of this, but it's one of those unfortunate releases where the audio had to be transfered from a copy of the LP, as the master tapes were unavailable or didn't survive. (lou reed's the bells and the three nazz albums are sadly also in this category.) as far as i know, any further vinyl reissue will have to be transfered the same way, via a copy of this vinyl here. so to hear it well, the closest you can get to the original master is to listen to the OG vinyl release.
this copy is without remainder notches or holes, and except for a wrinkle in one corner (shown) the sleeve is really nice as you can see. the vinyl is basically flawless and glossy these 55 years later. like all the LPs i sell it's from my personal collection, and i've really been gentle with this stuff.
