Rarity: A first issue in this condition could be considered rare. But even mid-70s copies hardly played with a superb cover are elusive. Unusual to see a first issue matrix being included as well.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Zappa’s third ‘solo’ album after the controversial disbandment of the original Mothers of Invention. ‘Chunga’s Revenge’, with it’s famous ‘Yawning’ cover, introduced singers Flo and Eddie (ex-Turtles Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a duo who later sang backing vocals for T Rex). Also featuring several players from the previous solo album - the masterpiece which was ‘Hot Rats’ from 1969. This album, unfairly never one of his most acclaimed, but for me highly underrated, contains many gems and several classic instrumentals. The best being the title track which features Ian Underwood on electric sax that gets the full wah-wah treatment. The beautifully melodic and catchy jazzy track Twenty Small Cigars, actually an out-take from ‘Hot Rats’ and the glorious guitar-driven ‘Transylvania Boogie’ with it’s gypsy rhythms. ‘Road Ladies’ describes the pleasures (and consequences) from the groupies around at this time. A varied album and again never short of experimentation. Violin supremo, Sugarcane Harris, plays organ on the title track and Frank himself plays all the percussion on the Varese inspired piece ‘The Clap’. This a slightly later pressing and appearing hardly even played with a superb cover – both factors that are harder to find. Very well pressed and offering ultra clean sound quality.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): but actually looks even better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: “A gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner dances about a mysterious night time camp fire. Festoons. Dozens of imported castanets, clutched by the horrible suction of its heavy duty hose, waving with marginal erotic abandon in the midnight autumn air”.

So states the front of one of Frank’s most famous covers with the huge yawn taken by Phil Franks. Not intentionally taken to be used on an album cover, but when Zappa saw the picture, he liked it and decided to use it. Here seen in very impressive condition and devoid of the usual wear and grubbiness most seem to acquire. There is barely anything to fault bar a couple of ultra fine spine edge hairlines.

Cover Back: Along with Burnt Weeny Sandwich, probably the most ringwear prone Zappa cover. Finding the back with none is a massively difficult task, but as can be seen on the picture, this has barely even a trace. The colour remains very strong and unfaded. There is a ‘Downtown Records’ sticker on the bottom corner, this almost like new and clearly never picked at or removed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inner faces are almost as made and the Cal Schenkel artwork looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Again straight and flush, a little patchy fine rubbing, moderate near the very right corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on the back edge and both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The only issue on the spine is natural light fading, but all the black text is fully present and unworn. Solid, thick, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Minus the fading, I would have graded this splendid cover still higher, and being honest, few of these cover avoid this somewhat natural issue.

Corners: A little rubbing on the bottom right leading pair. Little else with excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks of any issue.

Cover Summary: Whenever this was issued, this cover is highly intolerant of wear, so this splendid example is something of an exception. One to hold and enjoy, it will not prove easy to find much better and should please many collectors.

Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid white unlined inner with little else to fault bar some natural discolour/ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a fantastic visual example with barely any surface traces, even as seen with scrutiny under bright light. Very clean with super shine and quite solidly pressed on high quality vinyl. Barely even played and visually impressive, one to please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies, whenever pressed, will outperform this still quite early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored (few even considered spine fading) and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: The back cover explains the vocals on this album are a preview for the following album - 200 Motels, it was the start of a new chapter in Zappa’s career, many fans were not sure at first - the original Mothers of Invention were much loved by their fans. Many found it unforgivable to disband them although several members still recorded with the new line-ups. This album is was a pathway to the transition, and is an important stepping stone - if you missed this ‘solo’ album first time round, try it now, you are unlikely to hear a much cleaner pressing. With the very wear-prone red cover also in very attractive condition and a little played record, it hardly gets much better if owning a rarer first issue is not a priority.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
