Very Rare "Banned" 1995 PEARL JAM / NEIL YOUNG "Mirror Ball" Record Cover Only ~ See Photos

Cover Art Condition & History: 9.9 / 10.0 ***Mint to Near Mint***This record cover is absolutely flawless. It was never distributed for the LP because of a dispute between Columbia Records (Pearl Jam) and Warner Bros Records (Neil Young) and a last minute cancellation of the press run.  Columbia did not want the name of one of their biggest-selling artists showing up on a competitor's album cover.  Despite the controversy, a handful of just the LP front covers proceeded to be printed for executives at WB and for the Domtar paper company (supplied the special stock for the run).  I was able to snag one and asked Emek to sign it for me at the TRPS Poster show in San Francisco. 

It has never been displayed (other than to photograph for this listing) so there has been no exposure to sun, moisture, or other contaminants.  I mounted & framed it with archival glass so it's ready to hang and display.  Last couple of photos show it as it would look on a typical wall.  

Emek is now a world-renowned graphic artist who has produced some of the most famous concert posters and record covers in the last 30 years.  This 1995 piece was one of his earliest creations (at age 25) before his name became synonymous with the rock concert poster genre. 

The Mirror Ball art shown here is extremely hard to find and even more rare is a hand-signed copy by the original artist.  It shows Emek's creative attempt to disguise both musicians' prominent initials--PJ and NY--below his meticulously drawn "Mirror Ball", perhaps anticipating a potential protest from Pearl Jam's record label.  He also cleverly transformed the flames surrounding the central motif (a tribute to Rick Griffin's famous "Flying Eyeball" poster) into the names of both "Pearl Jam" and "Neil Young", subtly and nearly imperceptibly repeated all the way around the circle. 

Somehow Columbia (Pearl Jam's label) DID get wind of the printing of the album cover by Warner Brothers and demanded that they stop the presses! Such is the way of things at the intersection of art and commerce. Although this original artwork was never used for the actual record, a few versions of the printing did slip out (this one) and Emek was able to later produce a larger giclee version as a poster.  

Grading: Covers are graded visually and conservatively under bright lights 

All LP Frames come boxed carefully in corrugated boxes made for LPs, with filler pads to protect the cover, frame, and glass.
