Description

Rare 10" 78 rpm 4-record box set: FOLK MUSIC OF OUR PACIFIC NEIGHBORS - Japan, China, Philippines, Fiji Islands, New Zealand, Laos, Tahiti, and Hawaii - Bowmar Records, 1630/1631/1632/1633, 4 10" records in the original blank paper sleeves, with a 4-page booklet and hinged box, released in 1955.  The liner notes state in part that these songs were chosen with an effort towards selecting those that would appeal to boys and girls of the United States, while presenting musical characteristics of the people from which it came; in this collection there are work songs, love songs, festivity songs, songs about the beauties of nature, and ballads. On the labels the vocalists are credited, and they include William Clauson, Eleanor Casanta, Marjorie Neefe, a sixth grade class, and a Marilynn Horne - I don't know if this is THE Marilyn Horne (American mezzo-soprano opera singer), but she would have been about 20 years old, and she had just started her career in 1954, but hadn't yet had her breakthrough (when Stravinsky invited her to perform in the 1956 Venice festival) - so it's possible that it is an early recording of hers (there are two tracks credited to that name, both vocal duets with one of the other artists). Very uncommon - I can't find any other copies of this box set available online.

Condition is EX+/VG+ (the records are glossy and look like they were maybe played once; labels have ink writing, booklet is clean, box has a cover scar, ink writing to front and back, edge and corner rubbing and a 3-inch split to one of the edges of the bottom of the box).

(Vintage Records, Vinyl, 78 RPM, 10-inch, Cultures, Ethnicity, Asia, South Seas, South Sea Islands, Pacific Islands, South Pacific, Native Islanders, Music, Children, 1950's, Music, Memorabilia, Collectible).

REGARDING IMAGE QUALITY: Some of our older listings have images of poor quality; a few months ago Ebay changed their image  size policies, and I was forced to automatically enlarge the images for all of last years' remaining items, which caused them to be grainy and  blurry.
INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS - WE SHIP WORLDWIDE - please contact me prior to bidding so I can determine Airmail shipping rates for  you.
WE NEVER USE STOCK PHOTOS - all images are of actual items. WE ALMOST ALWAYS USE MULTIPLE IMAGES. We grade all items  conservatively, and when grading record albums we follow the Goldmine Record Guide. Please see our other Ebay auctions for many used,  odd, rare and collectible books and records, paper & ephemera, and more. Thank you!
