Two decades on, the term lo-fi beats has been gobbled up and made into something corporate - a soundtrack to cooking, sleeping, whatever. But American jazz and electronic maverick Flying Lotus made this album way before all that, and it still feels new. As his debut, it helped shape the LA beat scene by mixing up glitchy textures, 8-bit melodies, hip-hop and jazz into something wonderfully experimental. Its patchwork of sounds and off-kilter rhythms leans toward mood and shows great restraint. You can hear echoes of J Dilla and Madlib, yet the identity is already distinct and this anniversary repress, remastered by Daddy Kev, reaffirms it as a foundational, if understated, modern classic.
