FLIN FLON MANITOBA, PENETANGUISHENE ONTARIO 1960's Canada Small Towns CBC RADIO Shipping Info Description Rare vintage 12" 33 rpm vinyl record: THE SMALL TOWNS OF CANADA: FLIN FLON, MANITOBA b/w PENETANGUISHENE, ONTARIO - RADIO CANADA/CBC TRANSCRIPTION RECORD - CT-28446/28453, E-219/E-220, produced in the early-to-mid 1960s. Part of an educational history radio series, featuring spoken-word narration, sound effects, and interviews with citizens, giving information on early history, settlers and pioneers, native Indian tribes, environment, culture, industry, and the origin of the names.
Flin Flon is a mining town in the sub-arctic area of Manitoba; this side is narrated by David Cruikshank of the CBC; Flin Flon was founded in 1927 by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBM&S) to exploit the large copper and zinc ore resources in the region. In the 1920s, HBM&S invested in a railway, mine, smelter, and a hydroelectric power plant at Island Falls, Saskatchewan. By 1928 the rail line reached the mine. The town grew considerably during the 1930s as farmers, who were impoverished by the Great Depression, abandoned their farms and came to work at the mines.
PENETANGUISHENE, sometimes shortened to Penetang, is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada; narrated by Alex Smith of the CBC. It is located on the southeasterly tip of Georgian Bay. Incorporated in 1882, this bilingual (French and English) community has since grown to a population of over 9,000. The name Penetanguishene is believed to come from either the Wyandot language or from the Abenaki language via the Ojibwa language, meaning "land of the white rolling sands". Located in the area of the Huron Indians, it is the gateway to the 30,000 Islands. Includes the legend of the Indian Kitchikiwana, info on the fur traders, fishing, naval ships, and more.
Condition: EX+/EX (the vinyl is glossy with only some minimal scuffing and some minor smudging; the paper sleeve has some minor wrinkling).
