Flesh Eaters was the nominal group founded by post-punk poet Chris D. (Desjardins), a singer renowned for his poor social skills (causing a revolving line-up which featured Stan Ridgway, John Doe and Dave Alvin, among a host of others) and a penchant for obsessively morbid lyrical themes. The first Flesh Eaters full-length, No Questions Asked, appeared in 1980 on Upsetter Records. Its follow-up A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die fleshed out Chris D.'s rather unique vision with a tight band. Though Desjardins rarely had backers as sympathetic and talented after that, he continued to record with 1982's Forever Came Today and the following year's A Hard Road to Follow.

A classic album of trashy-noir darkness, seamy Hollywood dreck, campy blues horror, and Stax-influenced, stripped-down guitar punk, the Flesheaters' first release, A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die, truly delivers what it promises: simple, direct, roots-flavored early L.A. punk. However, calling this a punk album is reductive at best. Sure, it utilizes the less-is-more, low-rent attitude and musicianship, but Chris D. and crew -- and it's an exceptional crew, featuring former Blasters Dave Alvin and Bill Bateman (accomplished roots players in their own right), saxman Steve Berlin, who later played with Los Lobos, and John Doe and DJ Bonebrake of X -- succeed in creating a sonic pastiche of true American music. From blues to jazz to rock to rockabilly, the Flesheaters were able to accomplish all, and that is no more apparent in their catalog than on this debut, which captures the fire and directness of early Sun Studios recordings -- albeit with more self-consciousness. Later the band would devolve into campier, less invigorating rock, but songs like "See You in the Boneyard," "So Long," and "Digging My Grave" are enduring testaments to this lineup's power, simplicity, and prestige. Chris D., with his whine and shriek later formed the Divine Horsemen, as well.

California's Chris Desjardins made ambitious records with a constantly changing set of Flesh Eaters that virtually amounted to a who's who of Los Angeles' new wave notables. Singing in a style akin to Hell's delirious hysterics, Chris D. turns morbid, sensational subjects like murder, vampirism and necrophilia into diverting entertainment through relentlessly intense lyrics.

Like most visionary types, Mr. D.'s report card was often branded "doesn't work well with groups," which makes it tough for him to maintain a consistent lineup. To capture at least a glimpse of said vision, Desjardins finally borrowed an existing band — LA's flower-punk Flyboys — to record the first Flesh Eaters EP. 'Twas a wise choice: the trebly, hyperkinetic playing matches him lunge for lunge on four breathless numbers, including the well-beyond-Costello conflagration "Radio Dies Screaming."

By comparison, A Minute to Pray is like seeing Technicolor after a grimy home movie. Partial credit goes to a stellar band that includes the Blasters' Dave Alvin and X's John Doe and D.J. Bonebrake, but primarily it's due to Chris D.'s increased flamboyance. He roars instead of snarling, and his tunes are lively and varied horror-movie stuff. Highlights: "Digging My Grave," "See You in the Boneyard" and "Divine Horseman." For fans of carnival fun houses.

Therefore we can only offer combined shipping up to a maximum of SEVEN (7) LPs / 12" vinyls. Any extra purchases will be invoiced, packaged and shipped separately.

PAYMENT

I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.

However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.

I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment.
