First released in 1972, this album marked the last to feature guitarist Danny Kirwan among the Mac's number. While often remembered as his swan song, the record deserves to be seen less as a farewell and more as a major creative leap for the legendary band. From the opening riff of 'Child of Mine', the band's road-honed tightness is obvious: Kirwan's melodic, blues-inflected lead meets Christine McVie's tasteful piano and the always on point McVie-Fleetwood rhythm section. Kirwan dominates the album with a mix of melancholy and grace-most beautifully in the instrumental 'Sunny Side of Heaven' and the darkly poetic 'Dust'. Bob Welch balances that mood with 'The Ghost', a formidable blues track. Also here, is his first great signature tune, 'Sentimental Lady'. Though Welch would later re-record it for solo success, the Bare Trees version remains more intimate. McVie herself contributes the sturdy rocker 'Spare Me a Little of Your Love' and the compelling 'Homeward Bound'. The album closes with 'Thoughts on a Grey Day', a recited poem that turns despair into beauty, bringing the cycle full circle. Now reissued, Bare Trees has since grown to be considered one of Fleetwood Mac's most underrated works: moody, melodic and quietly visionary.
