When Flatt & Scruggs appeared on the Carnegie Hall stage in December of 1962, it was proof that bluegrass music had hit the big time. Guitarist and singer Lester Flatt and banjo god Earl Scruggs (who has been credited, not entirely accurately, with inventing the three-finger picking style that distinguishes bluegrass banjo playing from its old-time antecedents) had fully emerged from the shadow of Bill Monroe, their former boss, and made a national name for themselves. Columbia released an album that included 13 songs from that performance, and this CD reissue adds the rest of the set for a total of 32 tracks. The uncut version of the concert makes a couple of things clear. First, that we really were missing some fine moments, including a gorgeous version of "He Will Set Your Fields on Fire" and a couple of fun bass-and-banjo duets. Second, that we weren't missing more than a few. The 13 songs on the original LP, which included a roaring rendition of the Earl Scruggs composition "Flint Hill Special," the surprisingly lovely (given the subject matter) "Hot Corn, Cold Corn," and one of the best performances of "Take This Hammer" ever recorded, did indeed constitute the best of the Carnegie Hall concert. Apart from the highlights noted above, the rest of it was good, but rarely transcendent -- though it does end with fireworks when Merle Travis joins the band for a two-song encore.

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting) (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
