Background -

It's not surprising that a band on Sub Pop's roster looked to the '70s for musical inspiration, but instead of the one-two Stooges/Sabbath punch of Soundgarden and Nirvana, the recordings of Pigeonhed look to Sly Stone, Al Green and Prince. The project is the result of a collaboration between two of Seattle's more credified figures: Steve Fisk, a member of Pell-Mell and one of the area's best producers (Nirvana, Beat Happening, Soundgarden, Unwound, Screaming Trees); plus Shawn Smith, the vocalist for Brad and Satchel. With a large roster of vintage keyboards, Pigeonhed debuted in 1993 with a self-titled album. Four years later, the pair reunited for The Full Sentence. The remix album Flash Bulb Emergency Overflow Cavalcade also featured some respected names, like Lo Fidelity Allstars, Technical Itch and Red Snapper. The duo also featured on a track from Lo Fidelity Allstars' debut album, How to Operate with a Blown Mind. - John Bush

(12'' Single) Pigeonhed is Shawn Smith (Brad, Satchel) and Steve Fisk (Pell Mell, Halo Benders) - this single is from their forthcoming ''lost'' third album, their first for Seattle imprint Fin Records.

Power Come Over Me begins with a solitary kick and is shortly joined by a galloping afro-cuban drum machine rhythm - setting the pace for what is certain to be a deep journey. Fisk and Smith chime in together, organ chords and falsetto vocals. The track builds slowly and steadily - the energy contained in the simple pulsating beat and accompanying synths recalls a club banger from a timeless era with edges that are delicately painted with sparkling disco psychedelic warmth. Soon Smith drops his high pitched crooning and belts the chorus with soulful abandon, ''Forever you've got me / well that I finally see / I found this so frustrating / so jaded... The power come over me''. It echoes on and the pulse propels the track into an intoxicating vibration of love that those from the club scene will feel through their whole body instantly.

Shining and overwhelming the senses - Pigeonhed's The Power Come Over Me is an exciting glimpse of what is in store on the upcoming full length De Colores - fantastic shimmering electronic music that is unlike anything in the current musical landscape. Produced by Steve Fisk and Shawn Smith. Engineered and Mixed at Arundal Gardens by Steve Fisk. This limited edition (500) 12'' inch black 180 gram vinyl disc contains a digital download card.

...distorted post-soul minimalism, driven by ailing keyboards, hissing echo and Smith's eerie Prince-on-Placidyl vocals... -- Mojo
