In these daunting times of excruciatingly fatuous political correctness, Fear's debut LP is like a refreshing tonic to the soul and senses. It's hard for me to believe that this album will be 35 years old soon, and having just reacquainted myself with its delightful vitality, brio, and just plain balls out rockin' attitude, I have taken it upon myself to spread the gospel of Lee Ving and Co before its upcoming anniversary.

If you liked the Circle Jerks' classic punk debut, "Group Sex," well, guess what? "The Record" is twice as b!tchin' because these guys can PLAY. Off kilter time signatures? Check. Absurdly dissonant guitar solos? Check. Super tight rhythm section and a vocalist who knows how to lead them? Hell, yeah!

And it's not all dumb hate for shock value, either; Fear's social commentary is satirically precise, particularly on "Let's Have a War" and even prescient on "Foreign Policy". (When Hillary Clinton bragged about the U.S. killing Ghadafi, Lee Ving must have been smiling thinking to himself, saying "Yeah, Hillary, foreign policy; heh heh.")

Also, like the Circle Jerks, Fear is a succinct band; none of the cuts comes close to three minutes, and the whole LP is over in under a half hour. It's like getting a rock and roll vaccination from all the pablum and bull$hit we are forced to endure now in 2017.

I'm glad Fear called it "The Record" because unlike most of the crap being played nowadays, it has BALLS and then some. None of that digitally enhanced detritus that is tragically de rigeur in the third millennium.

Bottom line: "The Record" IS THE Record if you believe, like me, that the core archetype of great rock and roll is expressing dissatisfaction about how screwed up and ultimately dehumanizing modernity is.
