I found my thrill listening to Fats Domino!

Antoine "Fats" Domino did not create New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, but he polished it up (without compromising it) to a point where his singles regularly made the pop charts from 1955-62. A special 1975 edition of Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" ranked him at #4 among the biggest rock 'n' roll acts of the '50s. And he was the decade's #1 R&B star.

"This is Fats Domino!" fittingly begins with his signature hit, "Blueberry Hill." Despite Louis Armstrong's really good 1949 version, Domino's piano-playing and laid-back vocals make his recording of the song definitive. (It also helps that the Domino record has no meddlesome female back-up vocals, which the Armstrong record unfortunately does.)

Also present is Domino's follow-up single, "Blue Monday," the first rock 'n' roll hit about hatred of the work week. Though it's my favorite Domino tune, he pretty much does a note-for-note remake of the 1954 Smiley Lewis original. But I still prefer Domino's version because I like his singing better, and his record boasts a fuller arrangement. (Still, the Lewis original has a way cool guitar break!)

Filling out the LP are some of Domino's early '50s recordings that show the difference between his R&B-only hits and the stuff that crossed over. The variances are not profound but are noticeable to the trained ear. Play "Reelin' and Rockin'" back-to-back with "What's the Reason I'm Not Pleasin' You," and you'll see what I mean.

Finding ANY of the first four Fats Domino's revolutionary, groundbreaking R&B/Rock'n'Roll albums on the original maroon (dark-red) Imperial label is getting next to impossible these days. The first pressings, even if they appear on the market, are all but scratched beyond recognition and usually unplayable. We proudly present here a very nice copy of one such specimen. (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small 1957 date stamp on the front panel

-        Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top and bottom seams.

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the back side (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.
