Though their name may have been intended to sound ironical, this more or less folky outfit
is now at least famous for providing a station for the restless Clive Palmer, who came from
The Incredible String Band and then went on to form his own band, C.O.B. (Clive's Own Band!),
with commercial success equally out of reach. On their first album an unobtrusive influence
of the blues is mixed with moderate success into typical British folk. Palmers' two
contributions are very wistful indeed, but unfortunately on Nickolson Sq. the two male
voices do not blend very well with the fabulously pure vocals of Johnson.
A Leaf Must Fall is very sad and very quiet. Main songwriter Berryman offers more
diversity: some folk-blues, some bluegrass, some well-meant philosophy.
The production is extremely natural with no studio tricks at all.
After Palmer left they shouldered on undefeated to produce the much stranger Chameleon,
an uneven but at its best highly underrated and interesting effort...(Tapestry of Delights)
