Label Conditions: Two superb examples that will rarely be seen a agreat deal better. Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Two or three very light and faint spindle marks on side one and barely a trace on two. A small light friction mark near the hole on side two near the hole can be seen on my scan.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very good solid weight and typical of the era.

Rarity: Scarce and getting harder to find all the time. Slightly harder to find in mono but do not underestimate the rarity of a super-clean stereo copy either. Especially so with a cover that has NO laminate lifting which is near impossible to find. More often seen with often serious and disfiguring laminate issues including lifting with large blisters, heavy creasing and crinkle lines (often in manufacture), dulling, mottling and cracking. This one has a little wear but the lack of lifting is a huge plus. Also a record hardly played and offering super sound with little unwanted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Still the definitive band for the genre - and this is where it all started. This is not quite the Fairport folk-rock formula we came to love on the three Sandy Denny era masterpieces that followed this incredible debut. This has strong psych elements within the songs and has been featured in the Record Collector monthly magazine’s features on the best UK psych albums of all time. This almost lost masterpiece justifiably received rave reviews from the magazine’s writers. Never an easy record just to find on vinyl, most offered are reissues, and it’s the only album this wonderful band made on Polydor. It was reissued in the early 70s with a very different, somewhat drab cover that simply does not even compare to this super original. Judy Dyble makes this album uniquely special – only the wonderful Sandy Denny was worthy of replacing her. This folk-psych classic can justifiably be hailed as ‘groundbreaking’ and will appeal to most serious music fans, not just folk collectors. It’s one of the most desirable albums to own within it’s field, but goes way beyond specialist territory. Even in these early years, Thompson’s song writing and guitar skills were way ahead of the rest. The album is beautifully produced by Joe Boyd and Tod Lloyd, the sound and feel is quite wonderful, it does exactly what is intended. Issued when folk and psych were truly in vogue and even ‘fashionable’, this album remains one of the most important. Judy’s vocals are pure class and on the wonderful cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Chelsea Morning’ it even matches her standards. One of the leading transition albums that took psych into folk and this will rarely be experienced with much better overall sound. Even the stereo copies were still often subjected to old mono record players, trashed and ruined by heavyweight piledriver thick stylus from yesteryear. As stated, the record looks little used – a couple of fine surface marks have no sound and it plays beautifully with very little unwanted (explained further down). Although the cover was fully laminated, it often incurs major problems, the most regular being large lifts which do spoil the effect. Being so dark, this is hugely revealing of all blemishes. This has a little dulling and a few light creases, but the lack of blistering is very unusual and a real bonus. So a very fine all-round copy most will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single fully laminated format that was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. This one has the unique stereo Catalogue Number with the third digit being a 3 instead of a 2. A cover unique to the earliest pressings before being reissued in a more budget looking, bland effort in the early 1970s. This original is in a different league of course with lovely artwork of the earliest line-up of this remarkable band.

Lamination – Front & Back: This always proves to be a difficult cover and few, if any avoid some issues with the actual laminate. As mentioned above, this has no laminate lifting, and is quite possibly the only one I have seen without it. A cover that so often suffers huge blisters on the spine and even other edges, but this (somehow) has avoided it. However, under light, some reasonably light dulling is seen around the rim shape, another trait rarely avoided. A few fine laminate marks and a small few mostly light surface creases, but barely any away from the sides making the visual areas look even more impressive. Overall, both sides are clean, quite fresh with fine shine and clarity. Quite a thin cover and given all the facts, this is a very fine example, and remember, this is around 43 to 44 years old.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still straight with barely any wear and still smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and still sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Any thickening, burring or chipping tiny, small, minor and light. This delicate entrance edge is way above average and neat.

Spine and Text: Constructed quite thin but still solid and quite straight with just a little compression in the central area. All text unworn and all the laminate solid and intact with super shine, clarity, and no peeling. Barely even a hint of any chipping with the artwork fully intact.

Corners: Any tip rubbing very small and light, the odd tiny tip crease with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult sleeve for those that know it, will already know. This is a lovely overall example, a few gentle reminders of it’s age and fragility, but still setting a very fine standard that will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a typical Polydor inner being in better than typical condition. This being very clean and barely even aged in fact. The polylining is firm and very clear as seen inside two perfectly crisp and neat window circles. Just one crease on the bottom left corner and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: very clean and retains a lovely rich shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A couple quite fine surface marks on side one that are mostly ignored with just a few very light and gentle ticks towards the end of ‘Decameron’, the only blemish of any real note on what is a splendid record. Any others are finer still and only seen more critically under angled light and harmless. I am sure it has been played very little and is still a very pleasing vintage disc to view. It will please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and wonderful record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Lovely sound with no distortion, never take this for granted on any record this great age, all frequencies remaining sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high indeed with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and no pops were noted. A small few very gentle and light ticks were noted towards the end of ‘Decameron’, but little else – a small blemish to politely remind it is a vinyl record that is being heard, not a squeaky clean digital version. The stereo mix is lovely and gives a more open clarity to the music compared to the mono, clearly it images better too. Tracking is effortless and this record offers master-tape clarity and quality. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic original record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and is a great opportunity to own this gem. An overall strong copy, both record and cover are very nice.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
