Recorded in a cramped, rotten raftered Manhattan studio through late 1992 and early 1993, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) marked the chaotic arrival of Staten Island's Wu-Tang Clan, a loose retainer of nine MCs and sonic samurai, housed under the banner and raw drum-machine aesthetics of producer RZA. First issued on Loud and RCA on November 9, 1993, the album's jagged loops, kung fu film samples and menacing low-budget grit reshaped East Coast hip-hop at a time when the West was dominating airwaves. Referencing Enter The Dragon and The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin, it both martial discipline and a lyrical anarchy, acceding the throne of hop-hop greatness while at the same time offering a window into the power of rap collectivity over the still predominant model of individual crown-bearing; In 2022, it was inducted into the Library of Congress for its cultural weight and lasting influence.
