A Critics View
The Stereo Record Guide (1960) said ……….”Oistrakh’s tone is pure and exceptionally rich………………….Lovers of violin music should not miss this remarkable disc. The stereo adds tonally to the recording but the gain in presence over the mono version is minimal in this instance.”
Record Condition (Play graded throughout)
Prior to playing, the record was cleaned on my Moth Record Cleaning Machine. Playback equipment comprised a Thorens TD160, Linn Basik LVX Arm with Audio Technica AT-95E Cartridge.
The record was examined in bright sunlight. There are numerous marks on both sides some quite deep. The sleeve shows a little wear down the opening edge and a small crease in the bottom right corner. The spine is undamaged. The reverse is very clean.
Side 1
There is a crackly background noise throughout, which is more noticeable during quieter passages.* There are one or two repetitive ticks only. There is just a little sign of wear in one or two louder passages but overall very little deterioration in sound quality.
Side 2
As in Side 1 there is background noise throughout and twelve faint repetitive ticks in band three plus a few in band four.
*It is quite possible that the background noise might diminish if a Mono Cartridge were used for playback.
