You probably know this “Ole ELO’ collection as an early ‘greatest hits’ Lp but it didn’t start that way. In fact, you weren’t supposed to have it at all. When Electric Light Orchestra hit the 5th Lp mark, their record company were rightfully a bit proud. They pulled together this PROMO ONLY ALBUM for DJs, highlighting some of their best moments over their run at Jet Records so far.
The Lp had this black & white album cover, but was pressed up on brilliant yellow vinyl. It is labeled on the jacket as ‘special programming aid, for DJ use only.’
It wasn’t long before copies of this promo were trading hands among the fans, and getting a lot of attention on the collector’s market. Jet senses that they might have something special here, so they ran it out as a real Lp, assigning it a real number (UA-LA630-G) replacing the original number (SP-123). They tipped in the album covers on the front of the jacket in full color, and got rid of the promotional text. Instantly, a DJ only Lp becomes their new hit collection.
