Collectors, here is a RARE RARE disc, electric Edison Diamond Disc 52492, circa February 1929. Two sides expertly played by pianist Muriel Pollock, "The Piano Girl". One side is the familiar "I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You)". Flip side is a nice Irving Berlin tune, "How About Me?". Miss Pollock (1895 - 1971) was a well known composer/arranger/pianist with Broadway credentials. She recorded duets for Columbia and many solo piano songs for Edison in the late 1920's. Both songs are great, wonderful variations in "I'll Get By" and a small snippet of "None But the Lonely Heart" in the Berlin tune. I cleaned the record with rubbing alcohol, it plays loud and very well with just a bit of surface noise. The record has the common problem with the Edison paper labels, I taped what remained of them to the record. Miss Pollock recorded both songs on December 31, 1928.
As you might know, Edison stopped Diamond Disc production in the summer of 1929. My research shows that the record was scheduled to be released in the new "Needle Cut" format, I don't know if this actually happened. So, consumer and jobbers only had a few months to purchase this record, which no doubt has a very limited production run. After 1929, Edison destroyed whatever copies (if any) it had of this record. The Diamond Disc format was obsolete, surely in a few years most consumers put their machines and records in the basement/attic/trash bin. How many of this disc are around 92 years later?? No one knows, but the answer has to be "not many"!! If you want this, do not pass it up, who knows when you will see another copy for sale! I have SEVERLY discounted my buy it now price due to the taped on/messed up labels, go for it!!
