description:
Nice high quality French stereo pressing of these essential Varese works showcasing early electronics, orchestral atonality, proto-serialism, and some of the first true noise experimentation of the 20th century, here performed by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra under Robert Craft with soprano Dona Precht. This unique French pressing has notes by avant garde composer André Boucourechliev, not included with any other issue of this lp! Deserts has a magnetic tape/musique concrete portion which was realized at Bell Telephone Labs with the assistance of early computer music innovators John R. Pierce and Jean-Claude Risset. Offrandes is a classic and pioneering atonal noise piece with an ensemble heavily weighted with percussion. Arcana is written for an orchestra of 120 players including 40 different percussions.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Varese studied under d'Indy, Roussel, Widor, Debussy, and Rolland, and was an associate of Richard Strauss, Erik Satie, Alban Berg, Henry Cowell, Anton Webern, Igor Stravinsky, Charles Ives, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Schaeffer; during his life he was an underappreciated member of the avant garde, but his visionary work anticipated many of the century's later musical developments, and he was especially influential to Frank Zappa. Pierce was an early electronic composer, a psychoacoustician, an engineer regarded as the father of communications satellites, and a science fiction author; he pioneered computer music at Bell Labs. Risset is a composer, pianist, and theoretician who studied music under Andre Jolivet and also studied mathematics and physics; he worked at IRCAM with Boulez, at Bell Labs where he met Vladimir Ussachevsky and worked with Edgard Varese, John R. Pierce, James Tenney, and Max Mathews, and as the first computer-based composer at the legendary INA-GRM musique concrete studios (center of study for electroacoustic pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis).

I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
