Big Bird EDDIE FLOYD Holding on with Both Hands
45 rpm single record, STAX release. 601035 UK release.
Originally from Montgomery in Alabama, Eddie was brought up in Detroit and founded the well known RnB group, the Falcons, which gave Wilson Pickett his first big break. Eddie joined the Stax label and joined up with Steve Cropper to write hits for Carla Thomas, Otis Redding and Wilson Picket, before his own release Knock on Wood rocketed him up the charts. the song has since been covered on record by over a hundred artists and as a Karaoke favourite many thousands!
The A Side, Big Bird, was written by Eddie Floyd in collaboration with well-known leader of the Memphis Soul Group, Booker T Jones. They wrote it in December 1967 while waiting at Heathrow airport for a flight back to the States for Otis Redding's funeral. It's a relentless driving upbeat number, in which Eddie pleads with the plane to spread its wings and take him up to his girl. Soaring sizzling horns proved much of the power, with a great dance beat from bass and drums, and some solid backing vocals.
The flip side is produced by Steve Cropper, with whom Eddie jointly wrote the song. It's a funky horn-laden number that could have been a hit in its own right. Just 2:28 in length.
One of my favourite Atlantic Stax numbers of all time, I had three or four copies of this at one time, but this is my last one on vinyl and has possibly only been played once. Such a waste - hope it goes to someone who will really appreciate it.
It's Eddie who is seen duetting with WIlson Picket on 634-5789 in the Blue Brothers 2000 film. Eddie has also been seen with Bill Wyman's Rythm Kings band in routs in the UK and worldwide. On 1 September 2017, at age 80, Floyd performed live at the Royal Albert Hall in the BBC Proms concert with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, in a tribute concert to 50 years of Stax Records.
