Description
Robert Bland: Drifting from Town to Town / Good Lovin'. Modern 868, V condition: moderate groove wear, average gloss, light noise, clean wax and labels. This record may have come from a juke-box but there's no ring. Side 1 is a blues ballad; side 1 is up-tempo and vaguely reminiscent of Rocket 88 but without the horns. Bland, vo, + pno, gtr, dms. Backup could be Ike Turner and his rhythm section; mxs 1825/6 put this in the middle of the 1952 Boyd Gilmore sessions which included Turner on piano.
Bobby Blue Bland, born Robert Calvin Bland, cut three or four records for Chess and Modern in the early 50s when he was developing his vocal style. This is one of them. None sold well; all are scarce. He then spent a few years in the army; signed with Duke Records after he got out in 1957; had immediate success with "Farther up the Road"; and the rest, as they say, is history. I had the good fortune to see him at a club in Cleveland during the mid-60s, and he (and Joe Scott's Orchestra) sounded every bit as good in person as on record.
