Songs: the battle of harlaw / the dover sailor / the golden vanity / the beggar laddie / rob roy / gipsies-o / gil morice .and others..(bio of Ken on reverse w/Maccoll and AA loyd).Kenneth S. Goldstein's (1927-1995) career in folk music, and his influence on the field, began in the 1950s. As a fieldworker and a record producer the architect of the RIVERSIDE FOLK SERIES LPs of the mid-1950s, serving as folk music director at RIVERSIDE and Stinson and PRESTIGE records, issuing over five hundred LPs of various kinds of folk music, on which he was listed as editor, producer, or both. The work he did during the 1950s and early 60s alone made him a towering figure in the folk music revival. He conducted short-term field studies in upstate New York (1951), in North Carolina (1952-1957), and in Massachusetts (1953). He also did ethnographic folklore fieldwork in northeastern Scotland (1959-60), on a Fulbright scholarship., on which he was listed as editor, producer, or both. He produced/edited on most of the premier recording labels of FOLK but now long defunct labels or series: Prestige, and its International sub-set, Westminster, Columbia and Tradition. For all that, he managed to produce a number of exceptional Lps many of which I offer here for the first time., A small note, if I may: This small but very focused folk LP meticulous collection highlights and traces the development of American FOLK music from its beginnings among colonist of the 17th-century, to songs of the mid-twentieth century. Many of the key people and the major varieties of American folk song are represented in this auction; New England Hymns; Anglo-American Ballads, Children’s songs; Work Songs; Love songs and ballads; Drinking songs; Outlaw songs emphasizing the central tradition of American Folk, the songs of the settlers from the British Isles and their descendants. All of the Lps listed here are pressed in the typical heavy vinyl of the celebrated 1950s pressings; the vinyl (most in their original rice paper or paper sleeves literally remained unopened.) At times I elected to simply photograph many as I found them: snug in their sleeve, others I pulled ou for the photo. 1950s vinyl allows for superb analog playback, yet bear in mind that may have a superficial paper sleeve mark; Each LP was removed except those virtually unopened in their rice sleeves and graded visually under a Hallogen light using the more recognized Goldmine standards for vinyl. ALL grades are NM (rainbow glossy; seems little if ever played) unless otherwise noted. Again, these were the premier labels of the era for Folk: Prestige international, Riversides’ folk series; private label; Folk; Elektra; Tradition etc. They all come from the same meticulously cared for folk LP collection from the mid-1950s on premier Folk labels a smoke-free environment. Some covers have a very small ‘green’ foil tag at the very bottom corner and/or a very small ‘green check’ on the upper right hand corner; some may have a of small catalog paper that falls out; if they come with a booklet then that is there unless otherwise noted—most of the LPs were played once after the typical ‘taping session’ that was typical of the era. Literally, ‘tape it once and never play the LP again!! That said, I invite you to see my other folk LPs this auction as I happily combine shipping.
