American rapper, singer and songwriter Everlast is best known as as the frontman for hip-hop group House of Pain but also a fine solo producer. His 2000 solo release Eat at Whitey's expands the guitar-driven, blues-hip-hop hybrid he refined on Whitey Ford Sings the Blues but found him thicken the production and surround himself with an eclectic cast: N'dea Davenport brings smoky elegance to the r&b-tinged 'Love for Real' while Cee-Lo, B-Real and Carlos Santana add their own fire, with Santana at the time fresh off the Grammy win for 'Put Your Lights On,' penned by Everlast himself. The album stays rooted in themes of redemption and hard-won wisdom and Everlast's gravelly delivery and nocturnal storytelling pull you into a world of sinners and late-night confessions.
