I will always keep my P&P prices as low as possible, and even after yet another Royal Mail price hike from April this year, I have NOT raised my prices and will never compromise on solid, safe packing that is invariably heavier than most you will get. My P&P offers probably the best value-for-money for vinyl records available, and I even will pay for full insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Brief Info: Evergreen Blueshoes were another slightly out-there American band who made just this one album. Another deemed viable to release in small numbers in the UK on London Records, it sold in meagre numbers, thus finding one will never prove easy. Totally overlooked, like so many of the lesser-known, more obscure new American acts of the time, they received scant promotion and most are lost in the vaults of time. Skip Battyn at the time was a session musician, he decided to form a band and recruited two friends, Al Rosenberg and Clarence White, White did not stay long and the other members seen above joined. This one-off I regard as a somewhat ‘lost’ gem: the content is mixed and a little bit out-there. It has elements of psych-era Byrds, even with early Beefheart overtones. Rock, folk, pop-psych and country – indeed Battyn (often seen spelled Battin) later joined The Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and the Flying Burrito Brothers when this short-loved band folded. All credits on this album’s cover and labels spell his name Battyn. Originally issued in the United States in 1969 on Amos Records (AAS 7002), this was a small label that did little to promote this band or album, here in the UK, it almost left the radar immediately it was released. The American cover showed the band in a more revealing graphic dancing naked. The UK cover was far less revealing and has a somewhat different graphic in a similar mould. This is a strong example that appears hardly played with the cover to match, one for collectors of the more obscure one-off US bands that saw very limited British release, this will never prove easy to find better with so few units even pressed or sold.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers all the folded edges and ends on the back via the spine. The main back panel is matt, unprotected with smooth card. Being a 1969 album, this has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back, here filled by the original blue inner sleeve to denote this is a stereo copy. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. The date-coded 1969 Decca-style inner sleeve is included in supreme condition.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: A lovely vibrant front with unique UK artwork. The laminate retaining excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling, even when viewed under angled light. No lifting and any small laminate creaes very few, light and faint – indeed, when viewed normally full-on, this superb, and quite rare UK cover looks little short of as made. Even the narrow unprotected strip on the right opening edge where the laminate ends is clean and unworn.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is also in impressive and still clean condition, this has aged little. Any grubbiness gentle and light near the edges that few will ever escape as a bare minimum. A small light surface crease near the top left corner area shows little, barely any others worthy of mention. The laminate end is also clean, and the peep-hole mono/stereo indicator is crisp and sharp. As seen in close-up, filled with the deep blue inner sleeve to denote a stereo copy inside.

Top Edge: The actual laminated fold is barely worn at all, and quite unusually, this Clarifoil laminated cover has NO bowing. Just the rear end panel that is a tiny fracition proud has slightly thickened here and there, this being ultra critical.

Bottom Edge: As above, the end panel a fraction more thickened, being the storage edge for around 45 years, that near impossible to avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Also seen from this angle, it reitterates just how thin this vintage card is, a typical Decca cover of the 1960s. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, but thin, straight with any compression mild and light, the ends are narrowed in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, for good measure, this is very well centred on quite a limited depth.

Corners: Barely any tip wear with just the odd minor tip crease. All retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very elusive late 1960s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most collectors and will rarely be seen in any condition as so few were sold.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: a truly stunning Decca-style inner sleeve that is as clean and fresh as the day it was made. Very unusually, this was NOT lined, and I have rarely seen one of these that wasn’t. But the ultimate proof being, there is not even a hint of any adhesive on the inside top opening area. Polylinings had to be secured inside with a strip of adhesive, or they simply pulled out (as most will have seen or know). The plain fact is, this genuine 9-69 (September 1969) date-coded inner sleeve was never lined from day one. This being far from standard, it must have slipped the lining part of the manufacturing process and few ever would have done. This, apart from expert and caring storage, means this amazing inner sleeve has not aged at all. Most lined ones will see the seam adhesive strips darken and brown over time, of which this one has totally avoided. I would go as far to say, this is one of the cleanest, freshest, most unworn or aged Decca-style inners I have ever seen. Incredibly, ALL edges are unsplit with no repairs and there is barely a crease to be seen. A 45-year-old inner sleeve that looks new and there is NO disputing it’s vintage with the 9-69 date-code as seen in close-up.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and typically solidly pressed for a record manufactured by Decca. In terms of usage marks, a tiny fine one at the very start of side one with a few light clicks, but little else. Any other minor blemishes seen under bright light are purely within the vinyl itself. A copy hardly played on all the evidence and this record plays superbly well. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album with obviously only a very limited run and sales before being deleted, plays – for most-all – even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing by Decca for the related London UK label. The aforementioned tiny fine mark at the very beginning of side one, emits a small few brief, light clicks but little else on the rest. Note the labels still include the American AMOS reference as does the cover. Few copies will outperform this ultimate early UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this somewhat ‘lost’ record. So not quite ‘perfect’, how many 45-year-old record ever truly will be?, but it will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, certainly an unusual one-off that rarely surfaces.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
