• RARE NEAR MINT MINUS TRUE STEREO ABSOLUTE 1st US PRESSING on the DEEP GROOVE blue ARGO "STEREO ODYSSEY" label with silver lettering (see photo). To me ETTA JAMES was not only one of the most important jazz and blues singers in history but also way ahead of her time. She was just as popular a singer in both the black and white communities. Her trademark voice is truly one of a kind. This Lp is Etta James, her wonderful voice singing both Jazz and blues. This is as up close and personal as it gets. This LP includes the incredible "Something's Got A Hold On Me" one of my favorite Etta James songs that was to reappear on Etta Rocks the House.
  • This amazing LP is pressed on beautiful THICK non flexible DEEP GROOVE ARGO vinyl. It comes protected in the original ARGO custom paper inner sleeve (see photo).

  • This copy was AUTOGRAPHED for me in 1985 here in Los Angeles. The Autograph is clear and strong and says "Love God Bless Etta James" (See Photo).

  • This famous glossy photo cover is pressed on thick cardboard stock with a pasted on back paper slick (See Photo).

  • The ORIGINAL TRUE STEREO analog mixes of these great songs are NOT AVAILABLE on CD. This is the only way for you to obtain them. Do not be fooled by inferior digital re-mastering, re-mixes or compilation CD's. This is an original TRUE STEREO ANALOG recording; the real thing.

  Few R&B singers have endured tragic travails on the monumental level that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk about it. The lady's no shrinking violet; her autobiography, Rage to Survive, describes her past (including numerous drug addictions) in sordid detail. But her personal problems have seldom affected her singing. James has hung in there from the age of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late-'60s heyday and right up into the '90s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc Mystery Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday). Etta James' voice has deepened over the years, coarsened more than a little, but still conveys remarkable passion and pain. Jamesetta Hawkins was a child gospel prodigy, singing in her Los Angeles Baptist church choir (and over the radio) when she was only five years old under the tutelage of Professor James Earle Hines. She moved to San Francisco in 1950, soon teaming with two other girls to form a singing group. When she was 14, bandleader Johnny Otis gave the trio an audition. He particularly dug their answer song to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie."

  Against her mother's wishes, the young singer embarked for L.A. to record "Roll With Me Henry" with the Otis band and vocalist Richard Berry in 1954 for Modern Records. Otis inverted her first name to devise her stage handle and dubbed her vocal group the Peaches (also Etta's nickname). "Roll With Me Henry," renamed "The Wallflower" when some radio programmers objected to the original title's connotations, topped the R&B charts in 1955.

  The Peaches dropped from the tree shortly thereafter, but Etta James kept on singing for Modern throughout much of the decade (often under the supervision of saxist Maxwell Davis). "Good Rockin' Daddy" also did quite well for her later in 1955, but deserving follow-ups such as "W-O-M-A-N" and "Tough Lover" (the latter a torrid rocker cut in New Orleans with Lee Allen on sax) failed to catch on.

  James landed at Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, signing with their Argo subsidiary. Immediately, her recording career kicked into high gear; not only did a pair of duets with her then-boyfriend (Moonglows lead singer Harvey Fuqua) chart, her own sides (beginning with the tortured ballad "All I Could Do Was Cry") chased each other up the R&B lists as well. Leonard Chess viewed James as a classy ballad singer with pop crossover potential, backing her with lush violin orchestrations for 1961's luscious "At Last" and "Trust in Me." But James' rougher side wasn't forsaken âÂ?Â? the gospel-charged "Something's Got a Hold on Me" in 1962, a kinetic 1963 live LP (Etta James Rocks the House) cut at Nashville's New Era Club, and a blues-soaked 1966 duet with childhood pal Sugar Pie De Santo, "In the Basement," ensured that.   This is Etta James 3rd LP released in 1962 and the TRUE STEREO original is the most sought after version to own. Autographed Stereo originals are even more rare.   Record Condition: Side 1 & 2: Near Mint-/Very Good++ ...the thick deep groove 1st press vinyl has full LIKE NEW gloss and a DEEP LUSTRE. the vinyl is really clean and grades closer to near mint minus. The beautiful stereo ARGO labels are clean with just light wear around the spindle holes which reduces the grade to VG++ (See photos). This copy plays quietly too with all the punch the ARGO ODYSSEY STEREO ABSOLUTE 1ST US PRESS version is famous for and is the keeper copy. Ii will be difficult to find nicer original vinyl. CD's and later vinyl pressings can't even come close to the incredible WIDE ANGLE fidelity of this TRUE STEREO original ARGO LP.

  Cover/Jacket Condition: Very Good+ ...the front cover has very light ring and corner wear (see photo). The back cover is clean with light wear (see photo). The seams are intact and sharp with only light wear on the bottom seam and at the corners. The spine is intact and lettering sharp (see photo). No cut-out holes, corners, drill holes, indents, saw marks, razor marks, stains, dirt or dust spots, mildew or mold spots, water damage, stamps, warping, bar codes, tears, or age yellowing.

  Vinyl Grading Policy:

  • All records and jackets are visually graded unless noted otherwise. CAUTION: Please be aware that the play grade may differ from the visual grade. If you want me to play a particular song and give you an assessment of background noise, etc. Please email me. We all have records that look worn but play great and vice versa. It is not possible to play as well as visually grade each LP listed. I TRY TO GRADE CONSERVATIVELY under the guidelines on this page, which generally follow the GOLDMINE standards. Although I try to be conscientious as a grader, there is the possibility that something could slip by me. In the event an item is not as described, REST ASSURED I will always offer a money back guarantee for purchase price of the item if returned safe and secure and requested within five days of receipt.
  • Mint = A mint item must be absolutely perfect. Certainly never been played if not still sealed. This would be an item where it was opened but not played maybe just to check the label variation.
  • Near Mint = The record shows no obvious signs of wear. The vinyl should show no wear from playing only the slightest of paper scuffs are acceptable. The jacket should look as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink-wrap.
  • Near Mint-/Very Good++ = The record or cover is clearly better than VG+ but not Near Mint. There should be some signs that the vinyl was played infrequently and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took excellent care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have light scuffs and or very minor light scratches that do not affect the listener experience at all. The label and spindle hole will be without flaws other than the lightest of spindle trails from being played only a few times if at all. The cover should be bright and sharp and will have only the very first evidence of discoloration or ring wear or creased corners. Although there may be some evidence of seam/spine wear, seam splits are not permitted for this grade. The jacket may be marked as a cut out by a drill hole, saw mark, cut corner or punch hole. I will try to list any cover flaws of significance.
  • Very Good+ = This is equivalent of the VG+ grade in Goldmine. The record will show signs that the vinyl was played but taken care of. Record surfaces will show signs of wear including some light scratches/scuffs that do not significantly affect the listener experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Spindle holes will have some wear but not be enlarged or damaged in any way. The cover will have general wear/ring wear but not to the extent that it materially impairs enjoyment of the picture cover. Slight seam splits are OK for this grade. Again I will try to list any cover flaws of significance.
  • Very Good = Unless it is a rare collectible, I usually will not sell records where both the cover and vinyl are below a VG+ grade PERIOD. This grade is included since some times there may be either a cover or record that the flaws in VG+ grade above are more pronounced but the other part of the package is of a higher grade. If it is the vinyl I will play grade it to be sure that the listener can still enjoy the music.
