Two songs from this EP made it on to "Afro-Latin Soul" however, both "Hooha" and "Gogogagaga" only exist on "Ethiopian Jazz" and are not on any other records made by Mulatu Astatke. "Hooha" and "Gogogagaga" both contain an additional instrument: a swirling eastern sounding flute that does appear in his music again until 1972.
"Ethiopian Jazz" was written and performed by Mulatu Astake (vibes/piano) and his Ethiopian QUARTET. His group was composed of local NYC latin musicians including: Rudy Houston (piano), Felix Torres (Conga ~ from La Sonora Poncena) John Perez (bongo), Roberto Cuadrado (bass) and Tony Pearson (timbales), other instruments include the flute, cymbals, hand claps and a muted guitar or other string instrument.
Mulatu Astatke's mixing of Latin tempos with the Ethiopian pentatonic scale was utterly unique in 1966. His Ethiopian Quartet/Quintet was also one of the few vibraphone led Latin Jazz Quintets of that time.
