Don't miss this great blog : http://jammagica.blogspot.com   HAILU MERGIA & THE WALLAS "Tche belew" - ETHIOPIAN INSTRUMENTALS (Ethiopia)   Kaifa Records LPKF 45 - Original first pressing from Ethiopia - 1977   A : Tche belew (1) / Yemiasleks fikir (2) / Yikirta lemminalehu (3) / Musical silt (1) / Lomi Tera-tera (3) B : Whogenei (4) / Ibakish tarekigne (3) / Birtukane (3) / Eti gual blenai (2) / Yenuro tesia alegne (4)   Arranged by : 1 = Girma Beyene / 2 = Mulatu Astatke / 3 = Yohannes Tekola / 4 = Moges Habte   Musicians = Hailu Mergia (organ), Mulatu Astatke (Xylophon & conga drum), Moges Habte (sax & flute), Mahmmud Aman (guitar), Yohannes Tekola (trumpet), Melaku Gabrie (bass, guitar) Girma Beyene (piano), Temare Haregu (drum), Abebe Kassa (alto-sax).   http://www.addistunes.com/Hailu_Mergia_and_the_Wallias_Band/   http://video.google.com/videosearch?sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&rlz=1T4GZAZ_frBE248BE248&q=hailu+mergia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=R7VVS66wI8qTjAeC_-ybDg&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CB0QqwQwAw# http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94477967   You will surely be surprised by my lack of  lyricism concerning a record that holds superior musical interest.  This may be because I tend to think that you know this Ethiopian music better than I do, as it is not my usual domain. The fact is also that I don’t really know what to say. It is so… Probably that there won't be many more chances to find another copy of this record. And certainly impossible to find it in this incredible condition ! Contains the legendary "Musical Slit" (popularized by Jim Jarmusch in his "Broken Flowers"...). But not only. All the tracks are absolutly fantastic. There are lots of expressions in this case : Don't sleep, don't miss it, good luck...Just want to say : Pray little bit harder. Record = Side A : EX- (I prefer to not grade EX to be sure that you will be not disapointed, few very light surface scuffs and traces, plays EX with few very light crackles listenable between tracks) Side A : EX- (lots of light surface ring traces, plays EX with few very light crackles listenable between tracks)   Cover = VG+ (warped, ring wear, few little brown traces, dog eared, corners and slices slightly worn)   Weight = 250 grs   Hailu Mergia and The Band Wallias Album: Tche Belew Song: Yenurow Tesfa Alegne Though I've heard some late-'70s cassettes that have blown my mind, I do believe that there were only three instrumental Ethiopian albums (that is, vinyl-only records) recorded and released during what Falcetto has termed "The Golden Seventies." Two are by the ubiquitous Mulatu Astatke, and saw release on the Amha label. The third is the record that contains the funky jewel heard here, credited to Hailu Mergia and The Band Wallias but owing much to Astatke (featured, naturally, on the vibraphone, which he introduced to Ethiopia). It saw release on Ali Abdella Kaifa's self-named label. Ethiopiques 13: Ethiopian Groove includes a song by Hailu Mergia from Tche Belew.   http://www.nowagainrecords.com/walias-band-musical-silt/   Though I’ve heard some late 70s cassettes that have blown my mind, I do believe that there are only three instrumental Ethiopian albums (that is: vinyl-only) recorded and released during what Francois Falcetto of the Ethiopiques series has termed “The Golden Seventies.” Two are by the ubiquitous Mulatu Astatke, and saw release on the Amha label. The first, Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits, collected his 7? releases on the label while the second, Ethio-Jazz from 1974, contained previously unreleased, long-form compositions. The third is the record you see here, credited to Hailu Mergia and The Band Wallias but owing much to Astatke (featured, naturally, on the instrument he introduced to Ethiopia – the vibraphone). It saw release on Ali Abdella Kaifa’s self-named label. As Falcetto points out on his excellent liner notes to Ethiopiques Vol. 4, there was not much of an instrumental tradition in Ethiopia until the advent of brass bands in the early part of the 20th century. Thus it’s not surprising that outside of the adventurous Astatke very few people attempted to record and release instrumental music in the short period during which the Amha, Kaifa and Phillips released a few hundred 45s and a handful of LPs in the country. Why this album contains only one song like “Musical Silt” is ponderous. The rest of the album is enjoyable, equally funky and benign. But “Musical Silt,” the only song from the album ever reissued, is a beast. While some might call it dissonant, it’s beautifully modal, a perfect example of the Ethiopian qenet system tempered by the tuning of the Western instruments the musicians play. And the rhythms; each component of the ensemble plays in their own time signature. “The one,” which most fans of funk music so readily anticipate in a rolling groove, never sounds exactly like you’d expect it. But the song chugs along perfectly – it ends some four minutes in, but you wish it would run for hours. A hypnotic groove fo’ sho’. Thus, while the song owes much to Astatke’s influence, we can’t cease without giving respect to the arranger and pianist Girme Beyene, whose tenure with the band Wallias continued as the band left Ethiopia and toured the USA in the early 80s. This song is arguably his masterpiece, which says quite a lot considering the quality of musicians he produced during his time in Ethiopia (including the awesome Alehmayehu Eshete).   ! GRADING For LP / NOTATION pour les disques :

NM (NEAR MINT) : Near perfect copy, played only a few times. At worst it may have one or two insignificant flaws. The highest grade I give for a non-seled record .../ Disque et pochette impéccables, joué seulement quelques fois.

EX (EXCELLENT) : Clean copy, there may be few very light light surface traces/hairlines, and few very light insignificant crackles, cover has minor defaults.

VG++ (VERY GOOD++) : Few light surface traces/scuffs, few very light crackles. There may be few traces on the cover, corners or slices slightly worn...Nothing serious but is not graded EX because of few minor defaults / Très bon état dans l'ensemble, avec de légères traces ou marques en surface.

VG+ (VERY GOOD +) : Played a lot, will show signs of handling, has surface marks or scuffs, plays with light crackles or light surface noise background, no serious scuffs (no jumps). Cover slighty worn (traces, light ring wear, dog eraed, corner ans slices slightly worn...)

VG (VERY GOOD) : Used record, played a lot, has marks and scuffs, crackles and few clicks while playing, sometimes constants but not too sérious,  no jumps. Still quite listenable.

VG- (VERY GOOD MINUS) : Played a lot and more (but still playable), lot of scruffs and marks, lots of crackles while playing, sometimes serious, may have serious clicks (or few little jumps).

G (GOOD) : Indeed, not so good...but still alive ! Played while his entire life (and once again today !), or really ill-traited...Lots of traces, marks and scuffs, serious crackles and surface noises while playing, serious clicks, may have jumps...And the cover is really in a bad state too...Must be very rare to be proposed in this state.../ En effet, pas si bon...mais encore vivant !
