The reverent strains of a historic church - the best of Cluytens' recordings

André Cluytens (1905-1967) was born in Antwerp, Belgium, but is known as a famous conductor who is representative of French music in the 20th century through his extensive performance activities and recordings in France.

Immediately after the Second World War, he worked with Munch to help revive the French music world, and he became the conductor of the Paris Opera, the music director of the Paris Opera-Comique, and in 1949, he became the principal conductor of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra, succeeding Munch, who had moved to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and he gained popularity with his elegant, sophisticated and stylish performances.

His success on a tour of the United States with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1955 brought him to the attention of the international music world, and from 1958 he was invited to appear at the Bayreuth Festival, where he continued to perform as a world-class conductor.

For Japanese music fans, the Paris Conservatory Orchestra's visit to Japan in April and May 1964 was a particularly memorable event, as it was the first time they had had the chance to experience the essence and sophistication of French music.

After the war, Cluytens began recording for EMI (Pate) in France, focusing on complete opera recordings, and he also recorded with the French National Radio Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra, with a wide-ranging repertoire , but above all, the series of stereo recordings he made with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra, his own personal orchestra, are a valuable record of the beautiful, elegant sound of this traditional orchestra, which was founded in 1828.

In 1967, the Orchestre de Paris was dissolved following the unexpected death of its conductor, Charles Munch, and was replaced by the Orchestre de Paris, which has a more modern sound and identity.

This recording of Faure's Requiem, made in 1962, is the most highly regarded of all the recordings in this series, and it is a classic performance that has been listened to ever since it was released in 1963 and has never disappeared from the catalog.

For Japanese music fans who particularly love Faure's Requiem, this is considered to be one of the best recordings of the Requiem, alongside the ERATO Colboe recording (recorded in 1972), and it was also released in our Super Audio CD Hybrid series in 2011 (ESSE-90055).
