About Direct-To-Disc:

This Album was recorded in the JBS-"direct-to-disc" system employing the most sophisticated audio equipment aviable. As a result, this recording represents the very best sound quality technically feasible at this time. - a fact well further discussion.

The long chain of events that starts with the music and ends with the listening ear usually begins in the recording studio. If a conventional recording system is used, the solists and different groups of instruments (i.e. drums, brass, strings) are recorded seperately on magnetic tape. A multitrack tape machine stores the signals individually. Such machines can posses more than 64 tracks, each of which can later be played back and processed as the recording engineersees fit. These tracks are then combined down to just two signals representing the left and right stereo channels, which are then recorded on a quarterinch tape with two tracks, known as the final fixing master, or the original master tape. After additional electrical modifications these two signals are transmitted to a cutting stylus, which plows a V-shaped groove through the thin, nithro-cellulose coating on a rotating alluminium disc called a master lacquer. From this master a number of stampers can made which are then placed in presses where the finished vinyl phonograph record is produced.

As anyone who listens to records regulary knows there can be a marked difference in sound quality between two different recordings. These sonic abberations are a result of the storage and duplications elements - the tape and the disc itself. Tape can rightly be said to cause the majority of these audible flaws: each time the tape passes over the recording heads, a small amount of hiss is added to the signal. In modern recordings, a certain spot on the tape may pass over the heads hundreds or even thoudands of times during the complicated business of mixing down to two stereo channals.

The JBS "direct-to-disc" system eliminates the fundamental cause of audible distortions by eleminating the tape itself. During the recording session the signals are transmitted directly to the cutting stylus, the master lacquer is produced simultaneously. The result is perfect recording and an almost total lack of hiss.

Of course, this procedure places much greater demands on the musicans and the technical personnel than conventional recording systems, as any mistake made by either would immediately be engraved upon the master lacquer. Once a direct-to-disc session begins, nothing may be allowed to go wrong.

Before this direct-to-disc recording was released, all concerned had to give their very best to make sure that you, the listener, can enjoy a perfect reproduction of the atmosphere in the recording studio during the original session. This, coupled with the highly enlarged dynamic range due to the direct-to-disc system, brings to you the most exciting musical experience modern recording techniques can provide.

Direct-To-Disc, "Direktschnitt" ist ein im Zeitalter der Bandüberspielung, der digitalen Aufzeichnung, ja sogar der Lasertechnik, geradezu antiquiertes Aufnahme verfahren.

......ABER WAS FÜR EINES !!.......

Wenn Sie bereits einige erstklassige Direktschnitt-Platten besitzen, werden Sie feststellen, daß kein anderes Aufnahme-verfahren diese vermeintlich "antiquierte" Aufnahmetechnik übertrifft. Direktschnitt-Platten zeichnen sich durch größt-mögliche Dynamik und weitestgehenste Rauschfreiheit aus. .........Und das kommt so:......

Träger der musikalischen Information (von dem nachher die Platten gepresst werden) ist nicht das Tonband, sondern von Anfang an die Original-Master-Folie. Während der Musiker (oder die Musiker) im Aufnahmestudio spielen, schneidet die Schneidemaschine die Masterfolie bereits mit. ....LIVE...... Das hat ein paar Nebenwirkungen: ......Spielfehler sind nachträglich nicht mehr zu korrigieren, und wenn Sie allzu gravierend sind, müssen die Interpreten eine komplette LP-Seite von vorne wieder einspielen. Direktschnitt-Aufnahmen stellen somit allerhöchste Ansprüche an die Konzentration und an die Kondition der Interpreten......

Gleichzeitig stellen sie enorme Ansprüche an die Technik. Denn der stärkste dynamische Impuls, der auf einer Platten-seite vorhanden ist, bestimmt die Breite der Abtastrille. (Das ist der Grund, weshalb Direct-To-Disc-Platten zum Teil nicht mehr als 16 bis 18 Minuten Speicherkapazität haben.).........

Das Ergebnis allerdings ist frappierend:....

Eine Wiedergabetransparenz von luftiger Offenheit, Instumentenklänge die kaum noch vom Original zu unterscheiden sind und Impulse, die zum Teil einmalig dastehen. Dazu kommt eine weitgehende Verzerrungsfreiheit und Rauscharmut ohnegleichen.......

Was die ERUS/JETON-Produktionen angeht, so unterscheiden sie sich noch in einem wesentlichen Punkt von herkömmlichen Direktschnittproduktionen: EINE LIMITIERUNG AUF 15.000 Auflage !!.......
