LP : Eric Dolphy – Last Date

Original Dutch mono pressing from 1964 on FONTANA, 681 008 ZL. This is the very first Holland pressing with laminated front and matt back, blue silver labels with a small deep-groove around the center-hole. (As you might know, the Dutch stereo issue has a different catalogue-number and a different artwork; the first US-issue on limelight has of course also a completely different cover artwork).

There are extensive liner-notes in English on the back. Recorded June 2, 1964, Hilversum, Holland, on the occasion of a „live-in-the studio session“ for the Dutch radio-program „Jazz Magazine“. Michel de Ruyter, the co-producer of the radio-program, tells the whole story of the recording in the liner-notes :

Dolphy arrived in Amsterdam on May, 29th, 1964. Just a few hours later he started rehearsing with Schols, Mengelberg & Bennink; they had four club-dates to play in the next days and therefore they were well-practised and operating togethter perfectly at the time of recording-session at the radio-program. A small crowd was invited into the studio to have some more sympathetic atmosphere, the gig was taped on June 2nd and was broadcasted the next day. On June 4th Dolphy left to Paris, were amongst others he wanted to meet his future wife who was studying ballet in Paris. On June 27th he arrived in Berlin to play a couple of shows, but he had to ask his „sub“ Leo Wright to appear for him because he was not feeling well; 2 days later , June 29th, he died suddenly and unexpectedly in a Berlin hospital.

The record includes some words spoken by Dolphy, they were taped in April 1964 on the same radio-program, when he was there as a guest together with Charles Mingus: „When you hear music, after it's over it's gone in the air. You can never capture it again.“ This is quite moving considering the fact that Dophy's personality was „gone“ somewere just 2 months later. Luckily the music is not just „gone in the air“ but it was preserved on this record, wich is one of the mid-60ies highlights of modal modern-jazz playing.

If you're located outside Germany you can listen to the complete album on youtube, German residents can only listen to “ Last date- Miss ann. ”, but you can listen to more here: londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2013/06/29/eric-dolphy-last-date-1964-limelight/

Please look: I also offer a Dutch stereo second pressing (from ca. early 70ies) of the record in my current auctions.

Line-up: Eric Dolphy/Flute, Bass Clarinet & Alto Saxophone – Misja Mengelberg/Piano Jacques Schols/Bass – Han Bennink/Drums

Tracks: side 1: Epistrophy - South Street Exit - The Madrig Speaks, The Panther Walks

side 2: Hypochristmutreefuzz - You Don't Know What Love Is - Miss Ann

Condition: unfortunately this is LP is not in a shape as excellent as the other records of my auctions, nevertheless this is a pretty rare original copy and it has been my own “starter-copy” for a couple of years wich I considered still enjoyable. Of course there are no skips or jumps, but anyhow it is more in the VG grading area. I've listened now again carefully to the complete record on my REGA PLANAR 9 with EINSTEIN TU 3 MC cartridge and on my LINN AXIS with DENON MC.

The record looks VG in daylight & in normal artificial light ( some tiny lines & a few marks/scuffs), it looks VG- under a very strong halogen lamp due to lots of tiny sleeve- and hairlines plus scuffs & marks, nothing of it is really deep or distinctly feelable. Side 1 looks better than side 2, the same is true for the playgrading.

Side 1 plays VG with a light tendency to VG+ : there are occasional soft minor tics, mostly behind and only sometimes next to the music, but nothing real prominent. Even the bass solo on “Epistrophy” has just a slight crackling in the background, it's the same in the bass-solo of “South Street Exit”.

Side 2 plays in VG with a light tendency to VG- : it plays similar to side 1 in general, plus there are a little more background-tics in a row and also more prominent tics than on side 1. On “Hypochristmutreefuzz” just a few tics are more prominent. On the 11:20 minutes long “You Don't Know What Love Is” there are some more prominent tics in a row in the intro and later (but less) in the outro, there are also occasional prominent tics in between. “Miss Ann” plays real fine, there are only 2 or 3 very low background-tics.

The cover shows some (but not too much) shelf- & agewear, all seams/spine are intact, the upper seam has no rub, the lower seam has 5 tiniest rubbed spots, the spine has 2 tiniest spots with rub and the lettering is perfectly readable with the exception of the “F” in FONTANA wich is a bit faint, the front-lamination is completely intact and the front is real fine, all corners are a bit rubbed/worn, the matt back shows some still moderate wear like discoloration or agespots (more on the left side), there are 3 little letters written in the upper right corner on the back ; overall strong vg with a tendency rather to vg+, please look at all 10 photos !

Grading & Cleaning:

  • all records have been cleaned on a professional record cleaning machine, either by me (Hannl Mikro) or by the pre-owners (Okki Nokki, Loricraft or the like). After cleaning the records have been played just a few times (or only once by me for playgrading)

  • I playgrade each record (completely or at least in parts) on my Rega Planar 9, high-end Moving Coil cartridge by EINSTEIN/ EMT TU-3 SFL (please consider that the playback might differ a bit depending on your own equipment)

  • I also visually grade cleaned records in daylight, in normal artificial light & under a strong halogen lamp

  • only an unplayed record is mint, my highest grading for a used record is mint- . My basic gradings are: mint – ex – vg

  • cleaned records are stored in a new pro innersleeve and they are placed in a PVC protection-sleeve

  • pl. note: even pro cleaned records may have received some dust particles during visual-/play-grading, photographing or few pre-owner playbacks
