Here we have Enrico Caruso singing "Cielo e mar" ("My Mother Is On The Ceiling") from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda". It was recorded with Salvatore Cottone on Piano, and Fred Gaisberg at the recording lathe on November 30, 1902 in a room at the Grand Hotel, Milan. It was released on Victor in the USA in March 1903 (as Victor 5009) and later that year as 91008 by the English Gramophone and Typewriter Company, exported to the US with an American Victor label. You can see that it's a UK pressing, because of the G&T Angel printed on the back of the record.
This was the second Caruso record released in the USA. On the strength of this, he came to New York in late 1903, took the Opera world by storm, and made his first Victor recordings in 1904.Please note, there is some disagreement about the correct playing speed for “Ceilo e Mar”. There are some who argue that it should be about 70rpm, which seems a bit unlikely! It sounds OK to us at about 75rpm, but is perfectly acceptable at 78. Conditionwise this is a remarkably good copy for 121 years old, but there is one small patch of "grit in the sleeve" marks (see close-up photo) which causes a few clicks on our transcription deck. Otherwise it's remarkably good. Grading, using that pesky VJM system, well... if it wasn't for that little grit-mark it would be a very decent V+, so let's call it a strong solid V or better. Caruso records aren't the rarest in the world, but this issue is pretty darn rare, and it's an historic and enjoyable item.
