Pictures at an Exhibition was one of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions who never heard of composer Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia's Nationalist "Five" or artist/architect Victor Hartmann, whose work was the inspiration for Mussorgsky.
Chronologically, it was Emerson, Lake & Palmer's third LP release (they didn't regard it as an "official" album, as it was comprised of only part of a longer live performance)
It worked on several levels that allowed widely divergent audiences to embrace it, it teased the brain with its mix of melody and heavy rock, and for anyone with some musical knowledge, serious or casual, it was a sufficiently bold use of Mussorgsky's original to stimulate hours of delightful listening.
It wasn't the first treatment of a classical piece in this manner by any means -- Keith Emerson had done several previously with his earlier group the Nice -- but it was the first to reach a mass audience or get heavy radio play (at least of excerpts), and introduced the notion of "classical rock" to millions of listeners, including the classical community, most of whose members regarded this record as something akin to an armed assault.
Those with less hidebound sensibilities appreciated Emerson's rollicking and delightful "Blues Variations" -- which bridged the gap between Tarkus and Trilogy -- and Greg Lake's lyrical adaptations of "Promenade," "The Sage," and "The Great Gates of Kiev." It does some violence to Mussorgsky in the process, but it is also the most concise, energetic, and well-realised live release in ELP's catalogue
SIDE 1: Promenade / The Gnome / Promenade / The Sage / The Old Castle / Blues Variation
SIDE 2: Promenade / The Hut of Baba Yaga / The Curse of Baba Yaga / The Hut of Baba Yaga / The Great Gates of Kiev (The End) / Nut Rocker
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with just a few light spindles - looks like this copy has seen little play
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, glossy sheen with just some light and superficial sleeve removal hairlines evident under a bright light - no other marks - and these have no audio consequence - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: Fantastic LP with really sensational audio delivery - crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one as this was one of the first gigs I ever attended) there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no real surface noise and just one or two occasional light clicks/pops (hardly anything really worth a mention and nothing major or ever intrusive and I did play-grade at a very loud volume). This is a beautifully clean pressing - one of the finest I have heard in a while and looking back over my records its actually the first copy I have offered since 2007 as every other original pressing I have considered played with far too much surface interference). This copy however, is exceptional, playing to an extremely high standard with great audio clarity, no groove-wear, no distortion and is strictly graded a very strong EXCELLENT++ for audio - they really don't come much better than this - great stuff - and without reservation, very, very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The heavyweight thick card gatefold sleeve is also in great condition - clean and unmarked with none of the common surface rubbing or ring wear. The edges and spine also display little wear and all spine text is clear and bold. The sleeve is however, cut slightly askew (please see close-up photos) - this would have happened in the factory and is not a later occurrence. Otherwise, this is one of the finest examples of this easily worn and rubbed untreated gatefold - EXCELLENT
