Yes, there are LOTS of these Elvis Suns for sale every week on eBay, but I can see from even a casual glance that MANY OF THESE ARE REPRODUCTIONS BEING FOISTED ON THE UNWARY BY UNSCRUPULOUS DEALERS (a/k/a greedy bastards) WHO CAREFULLY REFRAIN FROM properly describing their records! LOOK, ELVIS FANS, THE DEAD WAX INFORMATION ON MOST OF THE REPRODUCTIONS IS IDENTICAL TO THE INFORMATION ON THE GENUINE ARTICLE- instead of the actual number you need to know what the '2' LOOKS like in '72'- pretty hard to describe in an ad. What DOES matter is, on ALL Sun 45's (not just Elvis) up to about #220, first pressings ALL had what are known as 'push marks' (3 small raised circles spread equally around the record) under the label. If a big blow-up of the picture doesn't show any push marks and the dealer doesn't mention them in his ad (because they won't always show in a photo) IT IS NOT A FIRST PRESS SUN ORIGINAL. ALL the FIRST PRESS Elvis singles should have these, except #223. 'Mystery Train' doesn't have these marks, and you're on your own figuring out if you're spending $500 on an original or a boot of that one, but any OTHER Sun Elvis MUST have them! SUN 217 WEST COAST PRESS. WITH push marks. dead wax numbers are: U-143X-45 -- 2 72 (delta symbol)3446, on 'Baby'. Flip ('She's Gone') dead wax is: U-142-45 72 (delta symbol)3292

CONDITION: VISUALLY, IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE FLIP LABEL, the record rates a solid VG-(5). See my grading below. VINYL--It has lots of fine scratches and a few more serious ones, but still has some gloss LABELS- topside label is very nice not worn, only slightly dingy. FLIP LABEL -WHAT HAPPENED??? the only thing I can guess is some yahoo had GLUED this record up in some display or something. I have never seen another record with this pattern of damage. The label is either gone or great in a spotty pattern, most unusual.
PLAYS- only at a 3(G-) with hiss on lp needle, and a 4(G+) with a 78 needle. Another sad reality about most Elvis Sun 45's that these other dealers aren't telling you: if you get one and it plays great it's almost certainly NOT an original. You see, Sun 45s up through about 224 were almost always very hissy. It is thought that they might have been mastered using a 78 cutter, making a wider groove. I have played most of my early Sun 45's on good 78 equipment and I think this is probably true. it certainly gets rid of the hiss! The soundfiles below were made using a 78 stylus for that reason. When played with a regular lp stylus, you will hear LOTS of hiss, typical of genuine Sun 45's. Also, the flip has some rather heavy clicks here and there that make me worry this record might not play through on some people's turntables. PLEASE CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED AS TO THIS PROBLEM. I ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE THE GENUINENESS OF THIS ITEM, BUT I HAVE WARNED THAT THE FLIP COULD SKIP AND I WILL NOT TAKE A RETURN FOR THAT REASON

All my soundfiles are always from the actual record being auctioned- dual cs5000 t.t., shure v15IV cartridge and are unaltered by equalization or noise reduction.

M(10) NO COMPROMISES! PERFECT! Label, vinyl, sound, all perfect…

M-(9) Maybe a few smudges, some very fine sleeve marks, etc. All glossy vinyl. Label pretty. Sounds great!! (sleeve marks are those tiny scratches with no effect on sound)

Vg++(8) A few sleeve marks or a few fine scratches, label still nice. Good gloss. Could have the slightest of gray in grooves-- still sounds great!! UK: EX+

Vg+(7) Probably lots of sleeve marks, OR several fine scratches, OR one or two more serious scratches, OR scuffs. OR, a record with gray grooves. Some gloss. Label is still real nice! Possibly a bit of dirt on it, etc. Overall, a fine copy. No noticeable record noise. UK:EX

Vg(6) It has sleeve marks AND: numerous very fine scratches, or a few more serious scuffs. Still nice looking overall. May be noise in quiet passages, but still sounds good! Still some gloss. Label is beginning to show signs of wear, but not serious. UK: Ex-, Or VG++. Very good, NOT pretty bad

Vg-(5) LOTS of fine scratches and almost no gloss. OR a few serious scratches, OR scuffed. Label is possibly worn. Plays with noise which doesn’t overwhelm the music. Gloss is possible, if the scratches are bad enough.UK: VG+

G+(4) COMPLETELY covered with fine scratches, OR a mix of fine and serious scratches or other defects. Label may be pretty trashed, but is generally readable. Plays with hiss, crackle or distortion, but not awful. UK:VG

G-(3) A filler. LOTS of serious scratches, definitely some audible. Noise is more prominent than the music. Label is BARELY readable. BUT: it plays ok… UK: VG- Worse than good, you know?

F(2) Just barely acceptable. Plays through. Label SERIOUSLY worn. UK: G

P(1) POOR! Gots lotsa problems: Probably broken, AND has scratches etc. Probably doesn’t play. So bad I wouldn’t try. Whadda bargain!!!

NOTE: I DON’T DOWNGRADE FOR OTHER DEFECTS, SUCH AS WOL, SOL, #OL, SMALL STICKER STAIN, I JUST DESCRIBE THEM.
