Fourteen Elvis singles from the 50's that sold over a million copies each. Including one of my favourites and apparently Elvis's favourite, 'Don't Be Cruel'. The back liner notes give some interesting info, like how Elvis heard the Otis Blackwell tune 'All Shook Up', rewrote some of the lyrics with Blackwell's approval and recorded it in 1957, his ninth consecutive gold record. Otis Blackwell also wrote 'Don't Be Cruel', and that led Elvis to 'All Shook Up' by Blackwell. Elvis discovered 'Heartbreak Hotel' himself, the very first single for RCA Victor in 1956, while in Florida, well sort of, it was given to him by country and western writer Mae Axton and he liked it immediately. The Jordanaires show up the first time on the single 'I Want You, I Love You' after Presley was shaken up in a plane situation over Texas where there was engine trouble, he met them right after and recorded this single on Easter Sunday April 11, 1956. Elvis himself did not really like 'Hound Dog' that much but he performed it so well live it was decided by Steve Sholes of RCA Victor, that it needed to be put on wax. Elvis recorded 'Anyway You Want Me' within minutes of first hearing a demo of the song. Lots of interesting stories behind these songs, those times, some great documentaries out there.

This compilation was not put together slap dash, it was well thought out, covering those first and important 1950 singles Elvis recorded, when he was new and the songs were new, and the recording was innocent and the people lapped them up and consumed them again and again. Hungry for something new they got it. But for others they knew this music was around years before Elvis hit the scene, you just had to look for it, listen for it, and it was your private secret.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

This was rock & roll's first greatest-hits album, and it set the standard for all others to follow. As originally conceived, it was a 14-song collection of most of the King's biggest hits up to that time, released on the eve of his start of military service -- a dearth of material being in the offing, it seemed only logical to assemble these hits. Each of the 14 songs had earned a gold-record award for a million sales, a record unequaled at that time by anyone else in rock & roll. The album wasn't intended as a history lesson, so "Hound Dog" and "Loving You" precede "Heartbreak Hotel". Elvis' singing never sounded richer or more expressive, and one can fully appreciate in vivid detail the delicate nuances of his phrasing on songs like "Too Much." Scotty Moore's groundbreaking lead guitar part on "Hound Dog" and the Jordanaires' backup singing never came through more sharply (…)

(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ►click here  for the complete album listing).

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER
